Default Don't Upgrade Column View Bad in OS 4.6 or Higher

Please Login to Remove!

I went from a Curve 8310 OS 4.5 to a Bold 9700 and had to return it.

If you like "Column View" in OS 4.5 beware as it changes in all Blackberries with OS 4.6 or higher and that includes the Tour.

RIM changed the parameters for Column View and you can no longer see it well even if you set the font to it's highest setting (for a Bold that was 14.) Currently my Curve 8310 is set on font 10 and reads larger and sharper than the Bold.

Also beware it is slower. My old Curve beat the 9700 with 3G or EDGE. It didn't matter which network setting - my Curve beat it. I set them both in "Column view" for the test. Due to the new parameters for the Bold - it is loading more content (even in Column View) - you can't "see" the content as well but it is still loading it... thus I believe that is why the slower speed - more content woud take longer to load. But I could be wrong - it's slower that's all I know.

We bought Bold's for everybody in the home and had to return them all.

I wanted to pass this along for anybody thinking of upgrading becasue it was a real disappointment as well as a lot of work.

I did successfully upgrade my Curve from 4.2 to 4.5 and was very happy. This time I obviously would not be happy rolling with 4.6 which is on the new Tour. Because it has the exact same column view issue - I checked when at the store. So I will not upgrade this time and wanted to pass this along for anybody thinking of doing it. So you will know.

Beware - you don't know how good you have it if you are rolling 4.5!

I know what you mean, but I just bit the bullet and went with it.

Going from the 8330 Curve to the Tour (on Sprint) was actually quite a nice speed increase, at least for me. Just had to get used to the cursor and the column thing.

I wouldn't want to go back now.

I hear ya... I tried to go with it - I really, really tired. But we (all of us in the home) just couldn't see it well enough. You know, it has to be better and it just wasn't. We were all so bummed...

I am glad you are okay with it...

Wirelessly posted (Tmo's cheapest BB customer)

Are you referring to BB browser?

How about using an alternative browser like Opera Min or Bolt?

I don't like Opera and haven't tried Bolt. I really liked the BB browser in Column view for a screen that size. It was prefect - I have no idea why they would make it "smaller."

I just bought this - hoping it will solve my problem...

How many times are you going to post your "warning" to others that they should avoid the BlackBerry at all costs instead of upgrading? It sure seems to be everywhere at the moment.

Just keep your old Curve as it makes you happy. Why upgrade at all?

It's in the 8310 category because that is the BB I have. I wanted to warn people that if they upgrade to 4.6 the column view changes. I wish I had read that first. That is what the forumns are for...

It's in the Bold area because that is what I bought.

My family and I have supported BB since their inception - since they looked like a big 2x4. Nobody could be more upset about this than me/us.

But as I said, they are clearly leaving behind the column view I liked - so it's me that must change or accept it.

I don't have bad motives here.. just want to say the deal...

And hopefully from posting my sincere disappointment - RIM will think about it.

Didn't mean to offend any user of this forumn.

Just an FYI that this forum is not owned or run by RIM....

However, this one is: BlackBerry Support Community Forums - BlackBerry Support Community Forums

May want to post over there as well since it is run and read by RIM employees. Probably won't make them change anything, but at least you can let them know how you feel.

Thanks - I will do that.

This is a very good forum - hopefully they will check here as well - it would be stupid in my opinion not to. But you never know... so thanks for the link!

2 of our Curves needed to be upgraded 6 months ago - we have been waiting for the new Bold. Our "tech show" needs to run - I have to make a decision now on who and what device is going to deliver for us.

We can't keep waiting hoping the "next" BB will fit our needs... for that is what we just did.

I had a curve 8350i for nextel. OS 4.6.whatever. I didn't like the browser at all, and when I bought the wife a 8330m I thought, wow... this browser I can handle. I've played with the new 5.0 beta's and it's changing alrighty.
Sad, I too liked the simple yet viewable manner of the 4.5 browser.
Opera is ridiculous, I liked the older versions, the new one with the tabs, etc... the window is already small enough, now we're tabbing windows and adding that to the top??

I don't browse too awfully lot on my phone, but I too am sad to see this change.

Thanks for sharing your opinion on this...

If people have their BB set on "Column view" it's probaby because they want to see the font larger -- and have the pages load faster (less content.) To get away from that in my opinion is a mistake.

Who knows... maybe they will reconsider (not likely, but one can hope!)
