When you purchase a home, if there is a stove or refrigerator in the home, it should work unless the condition is explicitly stated "as is".

Once I got a riding lawnmower with a home purchase. It was left in the garage in the house when everything else but the appliances had been removed. The appliances were included.

While we were doing the final walk through before the closing, the owner showed up with his truck to take it away. I said "no way" -- my assumption was it was included, just like the other appliances, since all other not included property had been removed. I told them I would walk without it because they were not selling the home as shown, my lawyer agreed with me that it was a reasonable expectation and I could walk without penalty if it wasn't included.
The seller caved and included the $700 riding mower.

I had missed that dimension of the argument (that those raising as much heck as anyone weren't even VZ customers)-----but it's that empathy thing, afterall. I'm now emotionally invested in the outcome.

I was discussing this with my boyfriend - I am in the hates verizon group - and he had an interesting insight. He said that first, verizon can get away with that sort of thing because the majority of their accounts are business and those people don't complain. On top of that, he postulated that perhaps Verizon is happy to disable features and keep their consumer population low. they then have less customer service and billing issues to deal with. I have to say that his speculation has potential.

I too am glad to be in an area where all the carriers are pretty good because I can stay far far away from Verizon and all their charges.

When I found out that Verizon disables GPS, I was aggravated on principle. I didn't buy the BB thinking that I'd use it for GPS, but I thought it was a cool option. If the device has the capability, why disable it???

I just asked a Verizon sales guy in the store why and he mumbled something about security -- because Verizon has so many government agency contracts, blah, blah.

I can't believe it!

I just purchased a new car last week, yesterday it was raining and I found that the windshield wipers did not work. I took it to the dealer today and asked them to fix it. They said that the windshield wipers were disabled by the manufacturer and they were unsupported in this car. He further pointed out that nowhere in the advertised specs for the car did the manufacture specify that the windshield wipers actually worked. However, they will be coming out with a subscription based "clean windshield" feature in a few months that I can sign up for, for and additional $10/month.

When I got irate with the service department, he told me that it was my fault. I should have researched the car better. If I had wanted working windshield wipers, I should have purchased a car where working windshield wipers were an advertised feature of the product.

Wipers not working on a car would be more equivalent to your 8830 not being able to vibrate when a phone call comes in.
That would be an advertised feature, which is broken.

For the nth time... Verizon never advertised the 8830 as having GPS navigation features.
Your analogy would work better if they did.

But that's the disconnect between the two sides of this argument, I think. One side sees the seller deciding what his product and service is and how he is going to sell it. The other side sees the buyer getting a broken product and the seller being the one who broke it, whether advertised or not. I happen to lean in favor of the seller deciding what his product is, and choose not to buy it. But I have a lot of sympathy for the other side. --- Which I guess is a repeat of what has been said before by someone.
