Default Get rid of SMS chat threading

Please Login to Remove!

Just moved from the Storm to the Curve 8530 and now in my SMS messages I get what I guess is the chat threading. I find this very distracting and want to get rid of this view but I can't find how to do that by default. I can clear the chat and delete the chat but not change it so it doesn't appear in the first place.

Thanks!

I don't think you can get rid of it--I wish I could as I don't like it either.

Many requested it, RIM gave it.

There is a thread on this in the rants and raves section I believe, for those who do not like it to voice their opinion as to why. Maybe check it out and weigh in So far only those who do like it are speaking.

Wirelessly posted

I absolutely love this feature way better than the previous option!

RIM should offer the option of threaded or not. Possibily a future build. for now, you are stuck

That's crazy I never would have thought anyone would prefer the old text messaging over the threaded. But like others have said you can't change it back.

This depends on what you use text messaging for. If you use it only for conversations with people, I can see it being useful.
I used text messaging for Google Calendar reminders, Tweets, Facebook replies and news feeds. I need access to individual messages to make it work for me. Since I don't have that any more, text messaging doesn't do much for me now. I don't use it much for conversations.

I think RIM is assuming at this point that you use the applications and the internet that take care of those reminders and messages instead of SMS generally reserved for regular phones.

Fair assumption. However, I can post to Facebook (and Twitter at the same time) and read replies using text messages must faster than using the Facebook app--it's so slow.

For anyone interested, I'm experimenting with a product called Cortado SMS2Desk. It forwards SMS messages to an email address, allowing you to treat them individualy. The free version uses only your default email address. The premium version ($7 US) will use any email address. So far, it works pretty well. There are a few other products for $10

To add to the general dislike of the chat threading, functionally speaking, if you increase the font size above about 11 (as many of my end-users do), it starts to "grow" the black border of the chat until you can no longer see the body of the message. RIM needs to add additional control here unless I'm missing something!

I agree Mike, I have my font set at 10 and it still does not display the message body as much as I would like to see.

OMG I absolutely hate it. I can only see about 3 lines of text in a txt message. I'm very very seriously thinking about going back to my 8330. I loved that phone.

Why show me a big black bar across the screen with their number? I have their number because I'm txting with them. Why do I wan't 1/5 of my screen taken up with the number of the person that I'm txting with? That's just plain ignert.

I must say I really enjoy it. I like that it looks like a chat, and I like that the persons number and photo are displayed at the top, it stops me from saying the wrong things to the wrong people. As for the three lines of typing, a quick scroll up and you can see what you have written already.

Personal opinion is I really like it, since I got 5.0 a couple days ago. For those who haven't had it before, they may not, but it was a feature that users were demanding.

It seems that the question is whether users should have the option to disable threading -- not whether threading is more convenient or not for any given person or application.
There is an oddity with the BB implementation of threading: it appears to be by contact, not by actual thread. Moreover, there is a major bug that I have repeatedly run into. If I have an SMS exchange with someone and then they call me (or return my call) and leave a voice message, the reply-to becomes the voicemail code (*86 for me). From that point onward, I cannot send an SMS message to that person by any means -- through the message page, the contacts list, or by replying. The only solution is to delete the whole SMS thread -- meaning ALL messages between myself and that person. This is a real bug and makes the threading unusable. Otherwise, it would just be a classification by contact (with a few nuisances like not being able to reply multiple times easily, etc).
I'm not sure if it has been mentioned here, but if you hit Alt-S on the message screen, the messages are displayed the old way (BUT, they still behave as if threaded).

I feel the exact same way. Is it really that hard to just make an option to hide it?

This is a stupid feature. Shouldnt be mandatory either. All of us are not GOOGLE threaded fans either. I want to see each message and each time stamp, not one big PILE of messages. How Fn annoying. Ask Microshaft how well tweaking all the user GUI crap turned out in Vista. Fail!

I have to say that I really like it. Although I do see where people would want to switch it back. I like it becasue to send a lot of text messages to people since I work in technical support and I am a phone all day. It's a lot easier to see what was said if there is a long period without a message or something like that.
