Just a thought, to express a silver lining in using 1GB chips, which can be had for $15 to $20 nowadays.

If you fry a chip, if it's a 1GB that will not be as big a $ loss as the 2GB.

I have two SanDisk 512MB SD chips that two years ago fried for unknown reasons. [They seem like genuine SanDisk, but maybe they are not as they were eBay purchases].

Anyway, they are sitting in a little plastic bag and I was going to send them back to SanDisk on a warranty claim, but SanDisk dropped the ball on giving me a return authorization. So, they sit on a shelf now. Even if they worked, 512MB SD chips are valued at way less than what they cost new. Now 1GB SD chips are $15.

My point is that I am glad that it was not my 2GB SD chip that fried as those cost way more [at the time].

Ever since those 512MB SD chips failed I decided not to be in a hurry to buy any "largest capacity" chips because I don't want to risk losing the investment.

So for now I am sticking to 1GB microsd chips.

Query: Anyone else ever fry a chip? I am curious how common a problem it is. If you did fry it, was it due to error on your part or did it simply stop working?

Thumbs up 2 GB Micro SD card + Pearl = Tons of Space

I just ordered and received a 2 GB Micro SD card off of Amazon and I love it! First of all, it soooooooo small, I had no idea. When they say micro, they mean micro. Second of all, don't believe the rumors, the Pearl allows memory cards up to and including the 2 GB stick. I formatted the memory card using the Pearl and it reported back to me 1.91 GB of free space. Third of all, now that I have all of this space, what can I do with it?

So far I've loaded the movie Cars and Talladega Nights plus a bunch of games onto the card. Thanks go out to CrackBerry Addict: mckinneycm
If you want movies or games to fill up your Pearl, here's his link:
Index of /ftp/BlackBerry8100

Here's the 2 GB Micro SD card on Amazon. I paid $65 for it but it's now $60:
Amazon.com: SanDisk - Flash memory card - 2 GB - microSD: Electronics

But I'm still no where near filling up this memory card. Any suggestions of what else to put on it? What do you have on your memory card?

Is it true you have to have a certain OS to be able to use a 2 GB microSD card? I've got 4.2.0.64 and wouldn't want to upgrade to another OS unless it was a newer version of the T-Mobile 8100 OS

dabull, true, Newegg is a more reputable service other than a 3rd party seller on Amazon, but I would rather a SanDisk MicroSD card instead of an A-DATA card. I've heard SanDisk is much better.

Scud, correct, you need a certain level OS in order to see all 2GB of the card. I would say try it and if you can't see it all, then look for a new version of the OS.

xXSilentScreamXx, yeah it only says 1.91GB for me. That seems standard for memory cards. There's always some space allocated for things it needs. What does "hbu" stand for?

Yes this is standard. If you ever look at your hard drive space or the space on your flash drive, you'll see that it's never at the amount that it's reporting.

That's because some of it is used on "other things" that makes the hardware work, so that's why you get a little less than advertised.

Very normal...is the point.

a-data is not bad. this phone cant record video, you dont need a high-speed card. if the sandisk version is even that anyways... i agree sandisk is the quickest, but all flash cards hold up pretty much the same in terms of reliability... there are numerous reports of people using the a-data. i will when i get a chance to grab one, $55 is finally at the price they should be, 2x the cost of a 1gb card.

Do you guys have to reboot your bb constantly to see the media card in the media folders? Everytime I watch a couple of videos consecutively, then go back and watch another one, it never shows the media card so I have to constantly take the battery out and reboot the bb. It happens EVERYIME I try to watch anything after having already watched a couple. Gets a little frustrating doing that every single time! Just wondering if that happens to anyone else or what that might be?

Also, when watching a movie or some videos, it'll freeze like a minute into it and then when you exit out and try to go back into the video, it doesnt give you the media card option. So again, take the battery out and put back in, then it shows.

You're partially correct. Pearls with the newer OS can support a 2GB card. If someone is still running T-mobile's .42 OS, you cannot use a 2GB card, only a 1GB.

I have never experienced that, but I'm running a 1GB Kingston. You might have a faulty card, worst case scenario a faulty BB.

So a bad card would cause those problems? I have a 1GB SanDisk card now.

It might. Does the new SanDisk card cause those problems?

I did notice that when my Pearl is connected via USB that I can't see the media card on the Pearl until I disconnect the Pearl from the USB.
