Odd Hardware/OS conflict

I bought the Tour 9630 the very day it was released. I've been through multiple units because of the trackball and was fine for a while until I started having OS issues as they started patching OS 5 and updating the BIS server. I've since gone through two handhelds after having to wipe them completely clean and start fresh. My Tour started freezing, I'd do a hard reset, it would give an error, the cursor would move but it wouldn't respond to any commands and I'd have to do a hard reset again to get it to work...until the next time.
Verizon and RIM tech support insist it's a software issue but some odd glitch with the hardware and replacing it would be best - and does the trick.
I've given up and they've finally sent me a new Bold (for free - no upgrade, no new contract, nothing) and HOPEFULLY I can use my Blackberry in peace. Until OS 6 comes?
Anyone else experience this mess?
