Is there a way to unlock the GPS chip for the VZW version of the phone or are we just stuck having to use their navigator?

Discussed many, many, many times...there is no way around VZW's lock on the internal GPS. If you want to use the internal GPS, pay VZW $10 a month.

If you want to, you can get a BT GPS puck (like the Freedom Keychain 2000) and use it w/nav programs (including VZ Nav) your Pearl.
