No problem. One gateway you can use is send to [email address]. The gateway will route your message to the correct cell phone carrier's address. When the person replies, add that address to your addressbook and use it to send SMS messages.

The problem is not with the BlackBerry or RIM; it's with Nextel's (bogus) SMS service. It's an imperfect solution, but really it just takes some getting used to.

Have people who want to SMS you send their short messages to your address@your blackberry domain. Have them add that to the address book and you're all good.

My Comparison of Webmessenger, Verichat and IM+.

Webmessenger:

agonizingly slow. I like the way it organizes and alerts you of the different sessions and its game feature stuff but its way too slow for any real chatting.

Verichat:
Faster than Webmessenger but gets disconnected whenever it feels like it.
No way to know if your online or offline so you can think your talking to someone but your really disconnected. There's also no quick reference to switching between people your actively chatting with. (or maybe there was but it wasn't obvious therefore means unintuitive)

IM+:
The only choice if your gonna do some real conversations over IM.
Pretty fast. Doesn't get disconnected. Switching between active conversations is somewhat intuitive although it would be better if there was some kind of "ctrl tab" type feature so I could switch between em without having to scroll through the menu to click on active conversations or whatever. Also wish it had more customizable alerts. Despite its flaws(which webmessenger and verichat also have if not worse) it is easily far and away the best app for IMing out of these three programs. I had this before I tried the other two and I just found that trying them out was a waste of my time.

One time pament of $44 seems like a way better deal than continuousl paying 20 - 30 bucks every year for webmessenger/verichat as well.

I think the reason your battery is going down is probably the same reason your IM+ shows you as idle.

IM+ uses a central server to collect the messages and your blackberry pulls them down from the server. You can set a poll time in IM+. The more often it polls the server, the more data it is transfering and the less battery life you'll get.

Likewise, because it uses a central server, other AIM clients may see you as idle because it's not a direct connect situation. Messages will still get in and out using your screen name, but the active settings may not be correct.

IM+ is not perfect, but for a one-time fee and the multiple IM clients available it's pretty good.

I just got GOOGLETALK to work with my IM+ on my 7230! Not bad...

Gah. Yeah I paid for IM+ too.
dammit.

Yeah IM+ isn't perfect.
sometimes you get signed off and have to do a poweron/poweroff for it to connect properly again. happens maybe once every two days.

but in comparison to verichat/webmessenger its the second coming.

now ramble.. if its a direct connect type deal without a intermediary...
it will pretty much rape all the others.. (I only use AIM so I dont really care for Yahoo/MSN/etc)
