Tmo's data is terribly slow. They do not seem to know that 3g or broadband is... When I questioned the PDA tech whether or not Tmo was going to pick up broadband like Cingular, her response was, "Well, with Cingular you drop a lot of calls, and if the speed is faster, you'll drop the calls quicker." I'm not sure if it was dry humor or stupidity, but regardless, VZW's is MUCH faster. Compare cable internet service to dial-up.

Just my opinion..

TMo and Cingular/ATT use EDGE/GPRS, Verizon and Sprint use EVDO. EVDO is much faster. I don't have the specifics but EVDO is like your cable modem at home. 3G is supposed to be fast, but again I dont know specifics.

The older BlackBerrys used to have GPRS only which was painfully slow. I have a Pearl, which uses EDGE, and its fine for my browsing needs. Tethering...not so much.

Since there are no BlackBerrys using 3G (outside of EVDO) in the US, the point is moot. My observations are that GPRS gives you dial up speed - 30-40kbps sustained. EDGE is better, but still not good for browsing via the PC - around 100-200kbps. EVDO is by far the fastest domestically available solution. And I have not observed any difference between T-Mobile's EDGE and Cingular's EDGE. I have two 8800s here side by side...

No matter what you do... Verizon's EVDO is considerably faster than T-Mobile's EDGE.
This is true for on-device browsing as well as tethering.
NJBlackberry summed it up nicely for you.

well, i picked up a pearl...im trying it out. the 8703 seems more stable sometimes, but its ok so far. edge is not all that bad compared to evdo. yea, there is a difference but its not painful for on device use.

I have T-Mobile, and where I'm at for college, it's just GPRS, and while tethering sucks (I've done it before, ugh) mostly everything I do on my phone is fine. I go to mobile optimized webpages and can't tell a difference between GPRS and the EDGE I have when I go back home

I guess you also have to take into effect the processor's bottleneck?

Verizon data speed will definitely be faster than T-mobile data speed. You will notice a big difference.

If you want to save money on the plan than go ahead and get T-mobile. But if you more concern about the speed, than stick with Verizon.

Edge speeds average 50-90 kbps up to a max of 236 kbps, unless one is in an upgraded area where the max is about 280 kbps. 3G if and when it arrives on a GSM BB should be in the 1.0 to 2.0 mbps range.

EV-DO averages 400-700 kbps up to a max of 1.2 mbps. I think Rev A takes it to about 3.0 mbps or something close to that.

You must have a very slow Cable modem then. because evdo doesnt come close to my cable modem. but the speed of any wireless companies data type is all about location. ive used EVDO in the heart of the columbus downtown area and it was pretty quick. and so was Cingulars 3g card. but how many times have i been in the core of the downtown area? hardly ever. so pay more attention to the lower end of each types speed for a more accurate speed rating.
