If that is the case sales of Macs are up about 400% quarter over quarter. Instead, the Mac release says it is a 4% increase. That means more Macs were sold in one quarter in 2008 then you claim were sold in the entire year.
Yeah, there is an app for that. It is called research, and it took me about 2 minutes to find the numbers. Amazing things can happen when you search for accuracy and truth instead of numbers to support whatever biases you have.
Regardless, number of units sold in a defined area during one year do not equal number of units in use. Particularly with Macs, where you can buy one today and chances are it will still be functioning practically as good as new in 6 or 7 years. Macs generally do not degrade over time like Windows machines do, because of the way the OS works (mainly, no use of an ever growing registry).
Research how many people use computers, then take whatever number you wish to use as a marketshare % of Macs. Then let's discuss how "insignificant" the number of Mac users are to businesses such as RIM. Still, if you want to believe that you know more about what they need to focus on than those people who actually run RIM from day-to-day and have intimate knowledge of their user base, I can't possibly compete with that kind of hubris. I'll trust the guys and gals at RIM to know more about their customers and potential customers than anyone posting on a message board.
