Hi, does anyone know if it is possible to sent and recieve sms text messages via a wifi connection? Is there some sort of app available?

The reason I ask is that I dont get great coverage at home.

Nope. SMS is carrier network only, its not data of any kind.

Well, technically, you can "email" your SMS message to the carrier gateway... thus sending text messages via email, and via your WiFi connection.

That's a shame. I'm pretty sure the is an app for the iphone that makes this possible. Maybe Blackberry will come up with one too.

I have sent and recieved SMS through wifi only, I use it when i travel abroad all the time and no roamiing charges either, I am on a UK carrier dont know if that makes any difference so my answer to that question is yes

I think sending texts through wi-fi works with UMA, UMA is only available with Orange in the UK.
I could be wrong, but I know I cant get a text to send with just wi-fi activated.

your able to send via wifi???
not that i use text much now but im in the same boat as the first poster, UK crappy signal with T-Mobile on an 8900.
(most of my messages are via BBM and wifi works well with it)

UMA isn't something i have seen on Voda, Tmob or o2...
it maybe with Orange but I havent had much exposure to the Orange network.

how???

How? Because that network has UMA enabled, the others do not.

as I didn't know much about uma technology I checked it out:

what caught my eye is the suggestion that you can make voice calls over uma....!
is this possible??????

sounds like a licensed "gateway" surely the networks wouldn't allow this due to revenue loss..

anyone care to enlighten me??

Yes, thats the point of UMA.
Im not sure about Orange (the only uk network to have it) but I know from reading here that t-mobile US, you either have to pay via your minutes, or subscribe to a plan for UMA.

UMA isnt FREE.
You still pay, it just means that where you have crappy signal, you can still make calls.

That's the thing, I would be happy to pay for the texts I send, but how do I actually go about doing this? I get unlimited free texts as part of my deal anyway, my problem is just to do with the poor signal I get.

Depending on your situation, I would say, as soon as you can, go with a carrier that does have signal where you live!

You cannot send texts over wi-fi.

the purpose of UMA is to allow people to have coverage in their homes. It's particularly convenient for Blackberry customers because the phone will actually connect to eh Blackberry Internet Service via UMA. Voice will get routed over UMA essentially making all of those calls VoIP calls. however I don't believe that SMS gets routed over UMA. MMS very well might though. That's all data. And the phone won't make individual connections over WiFi either. almost all the traffic with the exception of maybe standard web browsing and email will get routed to your carriers gateway per the network settings that have been programmed into your phone per the company's setup

UMA is free, at least for me on Tmobile.

From what ive read,it either uses your minutes, or you pay for their @home (or whatever its called) service, meaning UMA calls are free, but your paying monthly for it.
