Default Tour UNLOCKED! (Tested with AT&T SIM)

Please Login to Remove!

This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone since it has similar specs as the Storm. I just figured I'd post it since I haven't seen this information yet. Hope this helps some people like the Storm unlock info helped me a few months back.

Just called Verizon Global Services (+1-908-559-4899) and got my Tour unlocked. Like the Storm it'll work domestically on AT&T (just tested) and I assume T-mobile also (haven't test it)

I had someone called the number for the AT&T SIM and then dialed out with it. Workes both ways. Didn't try data but the status icon showed "edge"

According to the rep unlocked it voids the manufacture warranty (is that true?). He also said it won't work domestically with antoher carrier but obviously I just tried it and it works with AT&T.

1. Go to Manage Connections > Turn All Conenctions Off
2. Options > Advanced Options > SIM Card
3. Type in "mepd". A few more lines should pop up on the screen
4. Type in "mep2". I box should pop up asking you to enter the code
5. Enter the code you get from Global Services and hit return.

Sounds like the standard unlock steps. Obviously you need to either paid for the phone full retail or have had the line for a while before they'll give you a code.

Good luck!

Unlocking doesn't void warranty. VZW has unlocked devices for quite some time. They'll give you the code if you know who to talk to.

So the question is - who do I talk to? This would be epic for me to be able to have AT&T + Verizon service on the same device.

With TMo I've never had a problem unlocking a Blackberry. If I tell them I'm going out of the country and will use a carrier there (I have family and getting a sim, and a number is no problem) and they just sent me the unlock code. The only thing is that you can't request more than one unlock code per six month period on the same line.

Is VZW stricter about it? Or if I tell them the same will they give it to me without hassle? I thought that if you requested the unlock, the carrier was obligated to give it to you since the phone is yours. I'm getting my Tour on Tuesday, and I would like to have the option of using it abroad with my own SIM card, but I don't know if VZW has hoops I will have to jump through.

The last time I unlocked my Storm 4 months ago they told me you have to have a device on a line that is more than 2 months old. If you just start a new line you have to wait 60 days before you can unlock.

On my current line (9 yrs) I unlocked two phones (Storm and Tour) within 4 months of each other and Verizon didn't hassle me.

How's the data and internet on your Tour with AT&T?

Ricky, carriers are not obligated to unlock them for you, they have different parameters. On ATT, I believe the policy is having the account for 90 days and in good standing. But even then, the old "traveling" out of the US story might get it.

Well that sucks... it's not a story! I actually do go visit my family for 1-2 weeks and get a temporary SIM card... what happens when you are really crying wolf? Is VZW going to say "nope... sorry..."? lol

I can't wait for my device to get here Tuesday... even though they said it was shipped today overnight... which I think would be tomorrow but apparently it's Tuesday... ugh. I'm excited.

I didn't try the data. I basically put the ATT SIM in, took a call, made a call, and pulled it out. I unlocked it so I can use it in Europe next month, not because I wanted to use it with ATT.

With that said, with the ATT SIM in my Tour the signal bar said edge.

How do you control if the data is flowing over Verizon or AT&T (or other SIM)? Can you turn off EVDO or EDGE networks via some option?

Yep. Very similar to the Storm. You go to Manage Connections and choose either GSM or EV-DO. The interesting thing is that if you have it provisioned on Verizon and are on AT&T, you still get e-mail through Verizon's BIS.

Prolly because it's actually RIM's BIS - just has Verizon's logo pasted on. RIM runs the e-mail infrastructure.

Is it no requrements anymore about your device should be paid off in a full price (without any promotions)? I remember before VZW Global asked about it for give you unlock code.

So... if I bought the phone online under a 1-year agreement, I can't request an unlock code until I've fulfilled my year? Is a 1-year agreement considered a promotion?

Does the Tour support the right GSM bands to work over in Italy? Does anyone know what they use there?

There are several carriers in Italy. Which one?

Yes, it will work on the GSM bands there.

It supports the following frequencies:

GSM Quad-band phone capable of global roaming (850/900/1800/1900 MHz)
CDMA dual band (800/1900 MHz)
UMTS European/Asian 3G (2100 MHz)

It sure is useful to use a cheap overseas SIM for voice, and still be able to use VZW's Global Unlimited EMail via BIS.
