Ahem...I did NOT call YOU stupid. I said it would be stupid to do this to a device and have to buy a replacement from eBay, such as the predicament you find yourself in but posting here for others to do. Basically, the idea of soldering led's into an expensive device, thus voiding the warranty is stupid (edit: unless you are a professional and know how to do micro soldering.) Read up on the woes of BlackBerry devices bought off of eBay.

EDIT: To John, what I was talking about was the entire phone, and there are many like that in perfect condition.

Blackberry Curve 8300 (AT&T) w Charger/Manual/Software - eBay (item 320284644111 end time Aug-11-08 15:39:35 PDT)
Nobody's getting 'mad', but for the majority of the consumers out there, your solution is simply not practical. As I said, one can do open heart surgery on one's kitchen table, but it's not something for the untrained person to contemplate, let alone actually attempt.

A better first post on this subject would be the following.

While programtically it's not possible to change the color of the trackball lighting, there is a method for anyone who is good at small electronics modifying or repair. The LED is a 0603 and can be replaced if one knows how to do micro soldering. DISCLAIMER: This WILL void all warranty on your device. Even if the device works after the modding but say, for example, the display fails a month later due to an unrelated defect, you'll have NO warranty and will have to purchase your own replacement device.

I have you beat! My 8 year old can void a warranty with no instruction whatsoever. Give ME a call and I'll help ya out when you get your new replacement phone. LOL

Find a few people on llamma.com that have not done an 0603 replacement, just let them know that it can be done to a blackberry, and you'll have an army of modded blackberrys. John, the phone that was in my earlier thread, BOTH were bought off ebay in mint condition, I sold the other, and I bought BOTH for only $113. I did have two phones, and this one was for business, the one that was screwed, so ebay is a good place to buy. You say that 99% of people cannot do this...99% of people who have ever modded a console, PC, or phone CAN do this.

How about this, we'll leave it at what John said, I do agree that would be a great way to have put this, I will write a tutorial for it soon, and I'm not sure how many people on these forums are electronically savvy and can complete it, but it is a fairly simple operation, even to a 12 year old. But, hopefully once I get the tutorial, more people will start to mod their BB's.

And I'm betting 99% of this forums user have never done this. This is a topic for an electronics board not a BB Forum.

many here can't even delete the vendor.xml file--let alone replace led's on a circuit board.

I'm sure the carriers will love to hear that. THey will love selling all those full price units.

Or was that adult-level soldering?

I will disagree with you on this. I do not think that most users should attempt this, but it is very much a BlackBerry related topic. I personally will stick to using Post-It flags, but for the more advanced BB users that have an electronics backgound this could be a viable option.

YMMV

All Mircrosoft hardware (this gen) uses 0603 SMDs...Which include the 360 itself, the controllers, headset, and many others. Even the Wii uses 0603s. Adult-level has no matter, the 12-year-old I speak of knows more about most electronics than I do.

And you haven't shown me any way yet that it can be.

A nice video of the internal soldering might prove something, otherwise, I see nothing new here. Just smoke and mirrors.
