Ok here it is... I tried searching and couldn't find or understand what I am trying to do here.

I currently use yahoo messenger on my laptop to SMS text overseas for FREE. I just bought a 8310 through ATT and have unlimited media use a month with unlimited texting within the US.

If I text overseas using the ATT 100 text $10 a month plan, I never seem to stay under that 100 text limit.

Is there a FREE messenger service that allows me to SMS text message just as I can from my laptop using yahoo messenger? In yahoo it only allows me to send OFFLINE messages to their computer.

you could use Yahoo on your BB. go to blackberry.com/instantmessaging from your BB browser.

EDIT: Obviously I should read the whole post. I know with yahoo you used to be able to enter a cell phone number for a contact, and it would send them a text. Not sure if you can still do this, but if you add the phone number on your PC yahoo, it should then appear in your BB yahoo.

I don't know of one on the BB that will send SMS via the IM network.

Why not use Teleflip or the recipient carrier's SMS gateway? That way messages are email on your end.

Or, better, yet, get your SMS pal to switch to a BB and either PIN or use BBM.

Thanks! I tried the flip but in order for it to work, I need to enter HER foriegn phone number...so I can email her account and it appears on her BB 8310 as a text.

As far as her using BBM, doesnt she have to have a US SIM?

What is PIN?

she does not have to have a US SIM. a PIN is a unique # that every BB has, cant be changed, that you can use to send messages from BB to BB. This can be found in options>status, or by pressing ALT-SHIFT-H, or hold ALT and type E A C E

BBM simply uses PIN messages with an IM type interface

EDIT: You both have to have BlackBerry Data plans though
