Default 8320 built-in IM apps use data -- maybe?

Please Login to Remove!

Of all the topics sure to cause confusion this one gets my vote for #1. There are still TMO "Blackberry CSR's" who routinely insist that unless one pays for a text messaging bundle, he/she will be charged each time one of the Curve's included IM's are accessed. So, just one more time: Has anything happened to change what I understood was a settled question, i.e., as long as a 8320 user has a $19.99 Blackberry data plan, he/she will incur no usage charges for using those included IM's?

I hate to beat a dead horse on this issue but I just asked two TMO "Blackberry CSR's" -- since I have never used the IM's and wanted to be sure nothing has changed -- and both of them insisted I would be charged like a text message unless I add a text messaging bundle.

P.S. It's nice that TMO CSR's have a script to ask each customer 20 questions about how their day is going and how the weather is, but it would be even nicer if their so-called Blackberry CSR's actually learned the basic product features and charges.

Wirelessly posted (8130 Pearl (Sprint))

I do agree with the CSR script... Kinda funny.

Unluckly, the on board message apps do use text.

The best alternative is jivetalk. It costs a little bit does all the I'm clients. I am currently selling my user license for 25. This license allows you to use jivetalk on any blackberry device. There is a cheaper license that costs less but only works on one device.

That's a surprising answer unless there has been a recent change. I am sure many of the experts/moderators on this board, including John Clark, I think, have posted here a few months ago just the opposite answer -- that the on-board IM apps on the Curve use data, not text. Has this changed recently?

The old OZ IM application that was preinstalled on TMobile BB's did use sms. However, the new apps on the 8320 use data.

It amazes me that TMO's so-called "Blackberry tech reps" don't know this basic fact, but I had two of them this morning insist I would indeed be charged as text messages would be inasmuch as I have no text messaging plan. I wonder if TMO techs ever bother reading these threads. They might benefit.

In other words, if I use yahoo messenger (per say) and send a message, I wont be charged $0.15 since I have the $19.99 unlimited data plan? Is this what you mean?

Correct. It uses data not SMS.

Probably a newbie class that was on their first day on the phones. You can only learn so much in class before you have to go out and learn how things are really done.

I spent a year doing tech support for T-Mobile and up to my last day on the phones I was *still* learning things about the BB that I had never known or heard of before.

Combine that with the large turnover that comes with call centers. But, the resources are available so if the CSR you got on the phone answered incorrectly chances are they were relying on old knowledge and not searching like they should have been. Or maybe that resource was down (it happens... at the worst times).
