Question Boxee/XBMC/Media Center

Please Login to Remove!

As the playbook has hdmi out and supports 1080p content does this mean 1080p content is passed through hdmi in full 1080p form or does it support 1080p files but downscale for hdmi like apple tv?

Also is there any way to use this with dumb external storage, either nas or usb, to act as a media center with xbmc/boxee type interface to navigate films and tv with show summaries and pictures?

Thanks

It has full 1080 output.

There are several ways, but as of now they all involves connecting over your HAN, and accessing either through File Sharing or using a 3rd party app like Orb Caster or something along those lines. I think someone just released a new app that sort of does that called Splashtop HD desktop controller. 4.99 in app world, though not too sure if that is what you are looking for.

Hi, thanks that's good to know. As for Splashtop HD it's not quite the approach I'm after. I would prefere a direct connection from playbook to file store without needing a computer on and some form of media library interface to manage it nicely if that's possible? Thanks

Rather then getting a storage which you can connect to the Playbook the problem is more something related to the codecs and containters the playbook will play.
Rumor is, this will be improved with OS2.0.
Other problems are the way the playbook can access the storage:
There is no network client built in to the OS. The only way a factory default PB is able to play movies is to place them inside a webservers directory, but most simple comsumer NAS servers will have this option to serve the files via HTTP. Depending on the type of the movie the PB will playback the movie while loading or download it and play.
Even, if copying a movie from some accessible storage to the playbook would be possible, it takes ages. Makes 0 sense to me. Either streaming or better nothing.

What works nice however is a UPNP media server which is able reencode the content to something the playbook accepts and which delivers the content using flash.
I tried that with tversity and, it is ok for watching movies on the PB display. But 1080p output would require a 1080p picture, and tversity refuses to deliver this (even if the source is HD 1080p the movie is scaled down). Also FF and REV ist not working.
So your mileage is limited.

If someone finds a media server which is better for the PB I would like to hear it.

Orb Caster used to work rather well. Not sure if it is still available.

Features - Orb

I use an Apache server on my Mac (Hackintosh) called MAMP. It works great

Using a webserver you still have to reencode all movies to something the PB likes.
Most movies I have are mostly in mkv format. The mkv container does AFAIK not support streaming very well (this is not a problem with the PB but with mkv). Having a medialibrary and duplicating it, just for beeing able to to watch it with the PB makes not much sense to me.

I tried out orb, but either the sotware has changed, or, I am not seeing something obvious.
You install orb caster, but then ?
There is no documentation about an http port the software is listening to. How can I access the orb-caster in the local network ?

Or do I have to login to the orb web ? (I wont do that, because for local streaming I dont see a reason why I should give orb an insight of the content on my PC).

Yes that is true. The Playbook has support for many different types. WHen I encoded my library I did it in the Apple TV format; it is compatible with PB and my Apple devices,. I still use Orb to transcode for the XBox 360 ...
