Hi everyone..
I have a tricky question...

While doing tests, I noticed that if I provide a blackberry a 192.168.*.*, it is able to resolve it.
192.168 are internal IP adresses, not known elsewhere... (but I guess you know that :p )

My question is, how can a blackberry access those addresses?

I have been told that a blackberry comunicates with the carrier and RIM before actually communicating with the BES...

So how does RIM and the Carrier know where to send data?

Assuming the BlackBerry will be used on a BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Server), then the device will be able to communicate with internal machines/IP addresses by way of MDS Connection Services on the BES.

For starters... the user must be using the 'BlackBerry Browser' on the device... not the WAP browser.
The BlackBerry Browser is specifially designed to route traffic through MDS/BES.

Basically, there's nothing to fill in the blanks with.
The BlackBerry Browser on the device talks directly to BES/MDS, basically using the BES as the device's default gateway. Essentially, MDS allows "VPN-style" communications between the handheld and the LAN.

Of course, all traffic is filtered through RIM's NOC over the carrier's wireless network, but I don't think that's the type of detail you're looking for.

Short answer: Service Book

Long answer: The device looks up it's service book for the communication with the BES/BIS. Once it finds that, it talks to it (by way of the carrier) and the internal IP address (in this case, 192.168.x.x) is looked up by the BES/BIS. Naturally, on a BIS this would give an error (lol, unless the carrier has something on that IP, on the network of the BIS and no firewall). On a BES, however, it's entirely possible the company with it put something on the network the BES can see with a non-routing IP address. In that case, the device could reach it.
