Hey everyone, I apologize if this has been covered, but I couldn't find any reference.

I was excited about the prospects of the new iPhone, and as most Canadians out there, I was disappointed when Rogers announced the plans. I had read another posting someplace that a poster thought the Bold was simply a better unit anyway.

1. Is the Bold going to be as data hungry as everyone says the iPhone 3G will be? I currently don't use my BB8700r for surfing. Primarily email, contacts, phone etc. But the idea of the new Bold and some of it's features has me interested, I'm just scared of having Rogers charge the cr@p out of me!
2. I am a mac user, does anyone know if PocketMac/Missing Sync will be ready when the Bold is released? (I know, I should post this in the mac area, sorry). I wish there were better options for us. I currently get double entries after a sync and spend the next while doing 'housecleaning' on the BB.

well when you use the browser for surfing, it goes through the RIM servers, and whenever something goes through the RIM servers it gets compressed... so basically it all depends on how much you browse... I'm a heavy user, 50-150 emails a day, BBM, IM, Surfing etc etc and i have only used about 80 MBs a month... i'm sure that will will pick up with the BOLD as everything will load alot faster so i will continue to use... so i would say you would be safe with the 300mb plan with rogers.. if you want at first go on the flex plans starting at 50 a month and then you can see what you are using and then change your data plan accordingly

Well keep in mind those figures do not include a full month of HTML email. As it stands RIM servers compress web pages up to 70% and while I do not know about the iPhone compression, if any, but I doubt it comes close to that. That being said I use around 3-4gb a month

Been doing some testing with the Bold it dose not seem to be to data hungery but then all my traffic goes back though our bes server love the 3g on the bold though can see me using this bb alot more for sufing will keep you updated

but so far so good not used much data

Isn't this more of a question regarding the user than the device itself?

Does anyone actually perform some sort of benchmarking to determine if a device has more data overhead than another device?

No, i dont tether. And BlackBerry is known for data economy. There is compression before any data gets to you. Since iPhone traffic doesnt go through a dedicated server like the BlackBerry traffic does, you can be assured that it will use more data. How much more is anyone's guess.

I agree however the iphone users tend to use the browser more in my experience. That in turn will lead to higher data numbers, I for instance went from 10-25 mb used per month on 8800 to 50-120 mb on iphone. It adds up, especially the ability to stream audio and play videos from the internet whether they be youtube or video podcasts. sometimes there is no wifi and you stuck with the slow downloads.

The Bold screen has higher resolution, which in some online-interactive applications may cause more data traffic.

3G is faster, so the same time online with a browser can lead to more views of bigger pages, which can also spin the data turnstile a bit.

I think the battery is a bigger question - I just read that the iPhone battery craps out after 4 hours and change - the Bold should be good for more than twice that.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I know that data usage is a more "user" issue than a hardware issue per se, but I guess I'm just not understanding the whole 3G thing from the perspective of, is the phone consistantly sucking data for stuff just while it's sitting there?
I'd like to utilize applications such as GPS for example, I just have no idea how much data that uses when you would want some directions (I know,it would depend on how long you actually keep requesting more GPS info from Google Maps etc).

I think in the end, I'll seriously consider a Bold and try the flex plan. If after a few months, I find I'm not clearing 300MB, then I'll switch down to that plan.

Now I just have to find a way to sync my data flawlessly with my Mac and I'll be a happy guy.

I cannot speak to data usage on the Bold as I haven't used it nor do I know final details regarding the browser.

Regarding the iPhone.. on a light month I do about 200 MB and I have approached 500 MB on other months. I do not stream audio or video.

How does one find out how mucg data has been used. It is on my bill or can I find it when logged onto My ATT?

yes you can log into your att account and see. go to voice and data summary it should show you a breakdown.
