I was really starting to love my 8110.
That is until I drove home the other day and figured I would hook it up to my car stereo (through one of those tape adapter things) to listen to some music. It sounded fine overall, but every few minutes it would make the speakers in the car start buzzing for a few seconds. Then it would go away and start up again a few minutes later. I tried moving it farther from the console but nothing.

It was the same RF interference that I was getting through the work PC speakers, but even worse because the interference was being broadcast through the speakers much louder. The buzzing on the PC speakers was bad enough, but the car situation down right sucks.

I was planning on using the phone as also a convenient MP3 player in the car.

On a secondary sound issue, I was getting quite a buzz from the built-in speaker on the phone when I was talking on it. It was one of those rattling sounds that you hear on some cars where the stereo is too loud and the license plate in back is rattling back and forth. Same deal here - to slightly resolve that issue, I put in some padding in the battery compartment cuz it sounded like the battery cover itself was vibrating with the speaker (even though the cover is not loose). It helped slightly.

This is quite the noisy phone (both in terms of sound and RF interference).

What you are probably hearing is the cell phone checking in with the cell tower, it transmits every so often, that's how the network knows how to locate you.

If you disable the wireless, it should be fine.

There are more complicated ways of filtering the noise, but this is the easiest.

You won't receive and cannot make calls though, so don't forget to turn it back on when done.

Yea I figured it was the phone communicating with the towers... it does it every once in a while, but also when I am getting a call coming in or a txt message, i'll hear the speakers buzz a second before the phone rings.

Still though, I have never had a cell phone that interfered like this before. Turning off the cell radio just to listen to music seems totally counter to what a cell phone is supposed to be.

Is my phone just broke, or do they all send out interference like that.

All GSM phones (not just the Blackberry) make this noise when near any kind of speaker. There's not much you can do about it except turn off the wireless radio so the phone doesn't talk to the network. A Blackberry just talks more to the network than a standard phone, so you notice it more.

Didn't know that about GSM cells... now what about Sprint? What type of network does it run on? (That is what I had in the past).
I now have AT&T.


Going back to my other problem... the buzzing/rattling sound that I hear from the speaker when talking on the phone. I had done a search and found a long thread about the 8100 and how guys were drilling holes in their phones. Well the 8110 is different so wondering if that rattling-sound is typical of this phone and if there are any solutions.

Sprint is CDMA. It doesn't make that noise.

I've actually heard that same noise on my verizon phone a long long time ago every so often, but it's extremely rare.
It has to do with the fact that the GSM signal is stronger than the CDMA signal, or some such like that. At least, that's what I got out of the conversation I had with someone about it.
