is there anyway i can upgrade my 8520 so that i can use my 3g sim card as the phone is only a 2g it wont support my simcard and wont allow me to use bbm or bb internet

No. That limitation is hardware based.

Note also that in order to use BlackBerry data features such as BBM and BlackBerry Browser, you need an ACTIVE BlackBerry Data Plan. There's no "upgrade" that will allow you to use data without a data plan. It doesn't have anything to do with 2G vs 3G, however.
