Default OS 4 7280 users (16MB bb's ONLY!) much free space u have?

Excuse my poor use of the english language in the title, it constrains you =)

How much free space do you have on your Blackberry? With OS 4 I find that i only have enough messages for a couple weeks worth, and what i have installed isL

a) base applications
b) midpssh
c) jmirc
d) verichat
e) Maybe a picture or two (but usually don't have any)
f) Maybe some browser cache (?)

usually i'm hovering at 150k free space or less, which makes browsing the web VERY slow if you do not have any free space..

basically if you have a 16 meg device installing OS 4 is very painful as it takes up most of your space..

So, how much free space are you able to get and can you find anything that is an acceptable working limit for what you do?

Frankly i wish the Blackberry offered 'auto delete messages' less than 15 days..

Or if you could get a 32 meg 7280 i'd be in heaven..

When they 'silently' upgraded 6710's from 8 to 16 megs i made sure i got one.. perhaps this will happen again?

Make sure that you didn't install any module you didn't need... for example, only install those language modules you need, and remove the help (I noticed it ranges in size depending on the model, but removing it on the 7750 gave me a noticeable speed difference)...

That being said, the size of 4.0 seems to affect the CDMA models (which are slower to begin with) far more than the GPRS ones, so don't feel too bad.

So far I've tested on 6280, 7780, 7750. I'll try it on the 7280 tomorrow (with luck) and see if I can get you some numbers for it.

You can delete a few unnecessary stuff such as Brickbreaker if you don't need it (you can now uninstall it).

Right, that much is obvious guys..

i want to hear what *you* notice and how much free space can you get? If you are unsure or don't check, how many messages are you able to store on your device at any given time?

The most i've ever 'had' was abotu 1.3 megs after a fresh wipe and final OS4 install, and database restore.

Honestly i wonder how much space Browsing takes up, for example. Is there a cache you cannot empty, and is the cache emptied automatically when you close the browser or after a certain amount of time?

Just for interest sakes, did a quick & dirty test... here's the results:

AT&T - 4.0.0.17

All Applications:
TOTAL FREE: 3828772

After Removing Applications:
BrickBreaker (48K)
DOD Root Certificates (28K)
Help (85K)
English Language UK Support (6K)
TTY Support (2K)
Password Keeper (31K)
TOTAL FREE: 4172632

Rogers - 3.7.1.41
Factory setup
TOTAL FREE: 5840356

For Browsing... I honestly think it's the javascript that kills performance. For JS to work, it has to load onto the BB then run so you get a double-whammy (download first, then execute). Not sure about the browsers datastore... I would think it's static-sized and replaces content as needed.

Personally never really put any thought into how many messages I can store... more so because I actually delete mine on a regular basis , I don't think I've kept a message longer than 4 days (delete prior is my fav function ).

I actually thought on the Sprint 7750 that version 4.0 software ran a little faster. However, the CDMA 7750 as a whole ran WAY slower than the GPRS Blackberry handhelds.

To solve the 16MB RAM problem, I bought a 7290 w/ 32MB. It is a slick device and I like it a lot better than my 6210 it replaced.

When is the 4.0 software going to be released for the 7290? The current version is 3.8.

Their is 4.0 code for the 7290 on a Hong Kong web site (I forget the name - search for "Hong Kong" on the forum and you'll find it). Several people have tried it successfully.

I have not used it; I am waiting for a US carrier (any US carrier) to release it.

Hmmm... maybe my mind was playing tricks on me, it seemed slower to me but that could'a just been a preconceived notion. Until I upgrade another unit I'll take your word for it.

Someone also suggested that I disable style sheet support, and that did seem to speed things up a bit. I wonder how I'll know when I hit a site that uses stylesheets, where I would be better off with that option enabled?

I installed this today and it runs great. No complaints so far. I just renamed the vendor.xml file to vendor.old, installed the update, and it's great.
