Hi, recently got the new 8900 and wanted to get a few micro-usb cables to replace the old mini's.. Not so easy.. I've ordered 4 cables from Newegg, deciding to go with the Nippon Labs 6 ft version.

On arrival, I discovered that two of the cables didn't work. Confusingly, I could see the blackberry as storage, however the blackberry device manager wouldn't recognize the device as connected to the USB port. The RIM OEM cable works with no problems. I also noticed that the newegg cables are somewhat thinner and more flexible compared to the OEM one.
Any idea what would be a good place to buy a few working cables without overpaying?

On a separate note, I think, RIM should have given all the veteran customers 5 free cables.. What do you think?

Might want to try monoprice, I've always had good luck with stuff bought from them.

In general, I'm concerned that generic cables have potential compatibility/defect issues

This is what I use with my mini-USB cables and chargers . . . and works very well.

Those adapters rock, I got 4 of them from an eBay auction and got away with spending only $15 to get them all delivered to my front door.

I've also never had any problems with cables from Monoprice if it's any consolation, they have good quality cables that are extremely cheap.

If you do end up getting one or two let us know how they work out for you!

I ended up ordering 3ft and 6ft cables from monoprice. The Mini-Micro adapters sound like a great idea, but I don't like adding a failure point and make the cable long and cumbersome. Thank you for all the replies!

I would still prefer the adapter.. although these add to failure point but it leaves us with a flexibility of having a different type of adapter. MicroUSB is still not the industry standard and very few devices are having it.. GSMA is trying to make it by 2012. Mini USB is more a favorite for other devices.

I don't think the 2.5" long adapter will make for a long cable when connected with your mini USB cable. . . the flexibility of using it with a USB cable or a Charger is a big plus as well. . . I have one dangling with a USB flash drive so I have it with me all the time.

I bought this one, and I can confirm it works just fine with my 8900. Monoprice rocks.

I also bought a retractable cable from ebay that claimed to be compatible with the 8900, but windows just reports errors when I use it.

So YOU are the reason they're out of them right now?? I'm waiting for the shorter cables to get back in stock so I can get a few for my laptop bags.
