I read one of Mark's posts that said Cingular has activated the Blackberry browser for some people so I called to TRY to have it activated on my 7100g. I spoke to a CSR (really bad one) who told me that the only way to have the Blackberry browser is to be on a BES... yadayadayada... so I asked for the supervisor.

The supervisor was very pleasant until I told her she could do it (armed with knowledge from this board) and could I please talk to a Blackberry specialist. (I did ask nicely first- even tried to sweet talk her). No dice...she literally told me our conversation was over.

So what number should I call to get the Blackberry browser activated from Cingular? 1-866-Cingular didn't work....the first time. Do I have to keep calling and trying my luck? Is there a blackberry-specific number at Cingular I should try?

1. Are you using BlackBerryOS 4.0?

2. Did you try:
Tools -> Host Routing Tables -> "Register Now"

There are scattered (mixed) reports of failures and successes, so it's not always consistent across all carriers. I guess it's almost time for a "BlackBerry Browser FAQ"

Mark- I'm using 4.0 on a 7100g. I tried to register under the Host Routing Tables. I got an registration email. If it worked, would a new browser icon show up, or would the Cingular icon still be the only browser?

It is very carrier dependant. I am not sure of the exact procedures for Cingular. It's possible they actually don't normally allow it, but I am still not 100% sure.

what are the advantages of the blackberry browser? and did that number that mario gave allow you to get the browser?

Did it though Cing Blue today. They need to add Internet Browsing or something like that to your account and then the service book gets sent down/out to you. They weren't clear why it wasn't set up that way initially, but seems like everything with mine has needed a little prodding (they didn't actually set me up with service initially even).

The browser will show up as "Internet Browser" rather than just browser. Lets you go to regular HTML sites with normal graphics etc (albeit small. Reading the comics on this thing ain't going to be happening) rather than just WAP sites that you could hit with mMode.

Okay, okay... What about this? If I sign up with a 3rd party BES host, will I get the Blackberry Internet Browser?

If I discontinue service with the BES and go back to BWC, does the icon disappear or would I still be able to use it?

The issue isn't the browser itself so much as it's the Service Book entry that you need to have.

The browser that you would get delivered from a third-party BES/MDS will be pre-configured to route your traffic through that MDS (via a Service Book entry from that third-party service).

If you cancel your service with them, they will presumably remove your account from their servers. So, although the browser will still be there, you won't be able to actually go anywhere with it (since it will be trying to route traffic via the BES/MDS where you will no longer have an account).

Basically, you need Cingular to send you the service book entry for their service. I'm not aware of any way around this, unless somebody knows of a way to export an individual service book entry from one Blackberry and import it to another, in which case another Cingular customer who does have this working might be able to help you.

On Rogers, the BWC site has an option under "Profile" to "Send Internet Browsing Service Book". You might want to look for this on the Cingular BWC to see if it's available... (I don't think it's something Rogers added, since the BWC software is somewhat generic, but it may be possible that Cingular turned it off somehow).

The service book you can send from Cingular's BWC site is the "Web Client Service Book". How would we know if this is the one that enables the Blackberry Browser? I sent it to mine and nothing seems to have change. ...no new browser. ...no new option to switch browsers under Tools.

There should actually be two options in the BWC "Profile" screen... One will send the Messaging Service Book ("Send Web Client Service Book"), and the other will send the Browser Service Book ("Send Internet Browsing Service Book").

See the image below for an example of what I see on my Rogers BWC...

ok so i have the service books but how do i get the other browsers?
I hit the register now and got an email that confirmed my registration, in service books i have provisioning, cingular wap, cingular browser, web client, blackberry browser.. what do i need to do next to get the other browsers?

I had my 7100g a few days before our BES was up and running for a 30 day eval. At that time, I only had a WAP browser which was called "Browser" on the menus if I remember correctly. I never saw the term "Cingular Browser" anywhere on the handheld.

When we did Enterprise Activation, I then had the BlackBerry Browser, simply called "Browser" on the main page, and "mMode" (we are moving over corporately from AT&T voice plans and using the SIMs that were in the AT&T phones. I have been told this explains the use of "mMode", and AT&T carryover).

When we had to redo Enterprise Activation I lost my mMode/WAP browser which I got back by going into settings....host routing table...register now. I had tried resending the web client service book from BWC but that did not bring back the WAP browser. Now back, it no longer appears on the home page but on the applications page. THAT page shows both "BlackBerry Browser" and "mMode".

From the Main Page, if I click on "Browser", it takes me to BlackBerry Bookmarks; likewise if I click on "BlackBerry Browser" on the Applications Page. If I click on mMode on the Applications Page, it takes me to WAP Bookmarks. Since I have configured the BlackBerry Browser as my default browser, the convenience key also takes me to "BlackBerry Bookmarks".

I don't know if any of this info will help in any way.........

I think j_windmiller92 is right. We poor Cingular users only have the option to send the Web Client Service Book from Cingular's BWC. But, I did take a look at my installed service books and I have both Cingular Browser and Blackberry Browser. Only the Cingular Browser icon on the screen, though.

If we keep this up we will eventually document Cingular's product offering for them! :->

I was just as confused, but figured this all out last month....here is the way it works for the 7100g...

The "browser" on the main page is not an actual application but a shortcut just like the icons on your PC desktop are. It simply points to your default browser, which is the browser you choose in the "browser" options under "settings". In addition to this, all the different browsers you have on your handheld are listed under "applications".

For Cingular Blue (AT&T) customers, the phone comes with the mMode browser (wap). In addition, you can choose to send the BlackBerry Browser service book from the Web Client and it should then download the "BlackBerry Browser" (html). You can then choose which one you want to be the default browser and that will be the one you get when you choose "browser" from the main menu. But both browsers will be listed individually under "applications".

For Cingular Orange customers, the phone simply comes with one browser called "Cingular Browser" which will be listed under "applications". Of course, since this is the only browser, this will be the default "browser" on the main screen as well. The Cingular Browser is actually a wap & html browser and appears to do everything that the BlackBerry Browser does including javascript, flash, etc. So for Cingular Orange customers, the Web Client does not give the option to send the BlackBerry Browser service book since there is no need for that browser.

The only disadvantage I have found of not having the "BlackBerry Browser" is that the "Blackberry Extras" website does not load the flash version, but only the b&w version. This is obviously not a limitation of the Cingular Browser since my desktop IE browser does not load the flash version either. It seems that the Blackberry Extras website only loads the flash version on the Blackberry Browser. So other than this, the Cingular Browser appears just as good.

This is because all of the features of the Blackberry Browser are included in the Cingular Browser, so Cingular must have concluded there was no reason to give us the BlackBerry browser as well.

If you try using the Cingular Browser, you will see that it works great for html sites as well. And when you look under bookmarks, you will see it lists both "wap" and "blackberry" (html) bookmarks.

This is really a better setup than the T-Mobile or AT&T customers have since they have to deal with 2 seperate browsers, one for wap and one for html. We can just use one browser for both and not have to deal with the extra clutter.
