Default Edge / Gprs

Hi, I have two questions.

Firstly why does the writing on the top right hand screen sometimes say GPRS and sometimes EDGE, when I'm in different locations, what does this mean.

Secondly, I have enabled my phone so it automatically connects to my home wi-fi. On the top of my screen now, it says Orange - Sky........ I gather this means that I am connected to both my home internet (sky) and Orange. When I go onto browser, facebook, etc, which internet will it use.

Re first question: EDGE is the higher data rate implementation of the data service. GPRS is the older, slower version. The blackberry does both, using EDGE where available. You may be seeing the switch because you are moving in and out of cells that have EDGE service.

Hi there toptotty i too have noticed this

As aiharkness has already states EDGE is a faster version of GPRS however EDGE coverage is sparse and very dotted (i live in Central Scotland and it's EXTREMELY patchy)

Networks won't really bother much with EDGE coverage as they will now be focusing their efforts on ramping up their 3G coverage. Think of EDGE as 2.5G Network - not quite 3G quick but quicker than GPRS

And as you are on Orange you might occasionally see the term UMA instead of GPRS or EDGE - this basically means that when making calls, if you're GSM signal breaks up and goes altogether then it will use the Wi-Fi signal to carry the call forward... T-Mobile are big on UMA but other networks aren't so
