I have the same problem. And it is really annoying :( Perhaps I will return this phone and exchange it for a new one tomorrow.

It seems like everyone with an 8700 is complaining of dust entering the device. That means there is a real problem, which is a disappoinment.

I can't see under the glass (plastic) screen on mine at all, and I don't have any dust problems.

I've had mine for 2 days, no dust for me and I've been exclusively using the holster...

I have had mine 5 days and no dust under the screen. I use the original holster and it sits in my drink holder in my car. So plenty of chance for dust to enter but nothing yet.

I ported my Cingular service back to Nextel and will be returning the 8700 on Monday.
Still with Blackberry and back to my beloved Nextel 7520. Goodbye 8700.

I never use the holster. It sits in my left pocket and in my cup holder in my car, occasionally the inside pocket of my leather coat.

I noticed BarJohn has not posted a Dust problem here, why is it that his BB is immune from any harm that has ever been identified on this forum? He must have a geneticly engineered BB for superior performance!

Wirelessly posted (8700: BlackBerry8700/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102 UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0)
I just got mine yesterday afternoon and played with a while last night. Low and behold this morning I noticed a small speck on the right bottom corner of the screen. I actually thought it had gotten stuck below the protective plastic layer which I have not yet removed, but I was wrong, it is under the screen. I will probably wait before the initial Cingular 30 day store guarantee expires and take back for an exchange. I agree that the quality appears below average. The on button looks slightly twisted in relation to the spacing. Overall it has a plasticy feeling to it. They should have done a much better on quality. But the screen resolution is tops.

Dust AND Scratches!
I knew I had a few small dust particles, but I just carefully cleaned the outer surface with a lens microfiber cloth and used a really bright LED flashlight to examine the display.
Much to my surprise there is more dust than casually visible, however, there is a scratched area near the middle about the size of a thumb print. It looks like it was rubbed with something before assembly--like a gritty cloth because there are the tell-tale reverse direction scratches like when you go back and forth.
I may need to consider a replacement too but I know it will have a whole new set of manufacturing defects. And even though this stuff is purely cosmetic, you would expect manufacturing and design processes to have learned all about this years ago and avoided it during the development. Was somebody sleeping at the helm over at RIM?

I have now had three of them in my possession and I have not seen any signs of dust. I just checked on my latest one and looked more closely using a bright LED flashlight and none that I can see. Having said that, if the specs are small enough I probably wouldn't see them anyway! An advantage of Presbyopic eye sight

I'm not trying to start trouble, but here are my personal thoughts. Unless you are using this device in a vacuum. there will be dust. Not necessarily under the screen cover, but certainly particles will be all over the top of the screen cover. And unless you use a clean wipe every 3-5 seconds you will not be rid of it - ever. Further, I imagine each of these complaints is finding the dust with the screen OFF, which is a little perplexing to me. Who cares? If you see tiny dust particles under your screen with the device off, I just don't get it, that's a bit nit-picky. On the other hand, if you can see imperfections while the screen is ON and in use, then you have a gripe. But tiny bits of dust under the screen when in OFF mode, get over it. Sounds like my kid complaining about a scrathc on his new skateboard, let's get realistic.

seattle18, If these things were free, I might agree. But, they're not (for most people). I have a 7100g, carry it in my pocket, and have never seen a speck of dust under the screen. I would be angry if I did. Its not hard to seal the screen area, and I paid good money for it. Its like buying an expensive car and having the doors sealed so poorly you can't hear yourself think while driving down the highway. The 8700 is RIM's flagship device. I bet RIM will take note of these complaints and later-produced 8700s will not have this problem.

Does everyone have this gap between the keyboard and case where light escapes and dust can come in - or is this an isolated thing? I think if someone would put out a skintight case/condom/skin, it would solve this problem.
