In my experience with error 734 (working at T-Mobile) it is normally something to do with the init string they had you put in. Go to control panel>phone and modem options>modems>standard modem>properties>advanced check that over and over, make sure there are no spacesm also make sure everything is spelled correctly. Also I know with AT&T you have to be allowrd to tether which costs more so make sure that's available to you. Let me know if that helps at all.

I resent my host table and set the string to AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","wap.cingular" and presto I am talking to you on a tether ... I do have unlimited black berry service though.... SO I am good to go. I am going to cancel comcast

Thanks krisnowicki. I tried what you mentioned and that solved my problem with 734 errors trying to use my Curve as a modem to AT&T.

Tethering is great, but I wouldn't rely on it for my primary internet service. At best you can expects speeds that are a little better than dialup, but slightly worse than ISDN. Neither is close to what you can get from Comcast.

Do you have to have a tethering plan from At&T for this to work?

I don't believe I have a tetherd plan, I do have the unlimited data plan though.

I do have a question though, Why does my BB disconect so much and why when I go to reconnect it says the server isn't responding, it just hangs on the 'verifying user name and password' (the phone has full service and doesn't even send any packets out when it hangs).

It is great to use though when im at a airport that charges for 'net access

In my Host Routing Table there are about 20 different "Cingular [310#######]" which one do I register with. I tried a couple different and get the "registration message sent!" ... but I don't know if it really did anything. I am still getting the error. Is there a particular one I should be using? Should I delete a particular Service book? This was working fine for about a month.

So you know the unlimited data plan with att doesn't include teathering. Even with a teather plan you only get like 4 gig. You can get away with it but you can also get cought so be ready.

Thanks krisnowicki! I know this post is old, but your init string (in conjunction with other tips) has me finally online with my 8310 at a blazing 10 kilobytes/sec Good enough for what I need.

Tethering is just connecting your BlackBerry or any phone with data plan to your PC/laptop via USB cable/Bluetooth, so that the phone can act as your wireless modem.

It should be handy in places without hotspots. I would never try it to be my primary internet connection due to:

1.- It can't match my needs for bandwidth. (slightly better than dialup)
2.- As far as I know, any carrier would charge you for this service.
