I read the FAQ:

The first step in troubleshooting a network, software or hardware error is often to perform a hard reset. With Java® based devices, this is accomplished by removing the battery, while the BlackBerry device is powered on. Hold the battery out for about 30 seconds, and replace. The BlackBerry device will reboot.

To hard reset I remove the battery? Does this mean that the curve has volatile memory?

I am new to BB. It hasn't even arrived yet. I want to totally wipe it when it gets here because its used off ebay.

Yes, pulling the battery is a hard reset.

If you want to wipe all previous personal data, settings, etc.:
1. Go to Options
2. Select Security Options
3. Select General Settings
4. Hit menu key and select Wipe Handheld

So does this mean that the curve has volatile memory? Volatile memory went the way of the dinosaur at least 2 years ago for handhelds on the palm and PPC OS. Will powering the phone off allow me to leave the battery out for a day without data loss? Thank you so much. I am excited to learn about my soon to arrive BB. I am currently looking threw the FAQ.

I honestly don't know about the volatile memory, volatile memory requires power. You don't lose anything by pulling the battery while powered on. It clears your cache, primarily. And yes, you can leave the battery out for a weeks without data loss.

The FAQ I read about removing the battery producing a hard reset must not apply then. I found that info here How do I reset my BlackBerry? - BlackBerryFAQ

This info below seems consistent with your info. So it must have Non-volatile memory then. Thank goodness:
"Data Loss Prevention:
You can yank the battery out of your BlackBerry for a full week and put it back in one week later, and all your data is still there. Everything is written to flash ROM"

So what is with the first FAQ I found then, that removing the battery produces a hard reset?

Thank you so much for your help. I have been on palm and PPC for 7 years & have never had a BB. I get about 3 day to decide if I like it when it arrives next week.

I guess it is all in how you define a hard reset, you might recalling a Palm or PPC term.

For a BB, a hard reset is pulling the battery, as described in the FAQ. That FAQ, I wrote (actually, complied) from RIM knowledge base articles, and some personal experience/knowledge and other user input.

I think u r right. A hard reset on PPC and palm is a return to a fresh unused device. It wipes all PIM, configurations and 3rd party apps. It re-images the ROM to the carrier released state.

Is a hard reset on BB simply a shutdown/restart?

ayep, not the same. On the BB:

Wipe - removes all personal data, contacts, settings, configs, etc.
The new 4.5 OS will have a "return to factory settings" wipe also.

But a reset on the BB is terminology more similar to a "PC reboot" and also targeted at the wireless signal connection than it is the ROM state.

I would direct you to the Tips Sheet from Stinsonddog, see my sig. Look at the 83xx tips, 95% of them will apply to your CDMA 8330. I recommend printing out the PDF file, then sit down and practice the tips/shortcuts while using the device, for best retention of the info.

I will say there is a slightly steeper learning curve moving from a Palm or Win device >> to the BlackBerry. Some expectations of what you are used to, may not be present, and you could be disappointed initially, until you find, ask or discover the BB-similar workaround. So ask.

If I do a "wipe handheld" is EVERYTHING erased, or does it just return to manufacturer setting? I have a 8320 Curve... where exactly do i find the setting to return it to manufacturer as previously mentioned!! thanks!!!!

If you are going to return it to the manufacturer as you say then this info from the FAQ will be good for you:

"How to wipe the OS from a BlackBerry device?
From BlackBerryFAQ
NOTE: This does NOT delete the Operating System from your BlackBerry.

This wipe will remove ALL personal data (contacts, memos, calendar appointments, settings, preferences, etc.) from the device, almost as if "factory fresh". The device will still work for you or your next user. This wipe will NOT delete most Third Party Applications.

87xx series, 81xx series, 83xx series, and 88xx series:
1. Go to Options

2. Select Security Options

3. Select General Settings

4. Hit menu key and select Wipe Handheld"
