Nice write up!!! I am having the same problem as you know. I'm glad you got it. I found BBSAK but just got this Storm and wiping it spooked me to be honest with other posters reboot problem...lol. So, after all your hard work, is .419 a good decision? Thanks again for a nice write up.

Cincyfan,

BBSAK is very easy to use and low level wiping is not a big deal. The only PITA is that you must reload your 3rd party apps individually. If you use the BBSAK feature it bundles them all together in one file and it can cause conflicts.

Back up your phone contacts. Use the BBSAK and it also hijacks the apploader for you to upload the new OS into your phone. Very easy and there are instructions all over the internet - step by step.

I've done it for the last couple upgrades and my phone runs just wonderful.

I did the upgrade yesterday, and so far it's running very nicely. Radio signal seems to have improved, and quite a bit of memory has been freed up as well.

The key indicator is a nice touch, but I wish you could switch between the blue glow and the popup letters. Together they are a bit much, almost distracting, so I went back to using just the blue glow.

I am new to BB, and I have 2 questions:

1. Since this download is found on 9500 Series Discussion, I wish to know if I can run it on my Storm 9500?

2. As I am currently using the Version 5.0.0.451 OS (Vodafone Australia), I cannot find the Chinese Input, need to know how do I get official Chinese Input for my BB 9500? Or do I have to wait for East Asia version?

Default upgrading OS: why is it sooo difficult

I am tired of waiting for vzw to update their 9530 os. I've been reading different forums for past months and decided to try it today. At first, it seems as if you need to wipe your existing data? I've tried backing up using DM with no success. When I unzip and install, it's only options are remove or repair OS 5. Updating your OS should not be difficult.

I guess I'm stuck with os 5.0.0.328.

and why are all the updates only for windows? :(

Default how do i know the update was successful

Hi

Though i followed the steps in the first message and got the message "software was updated successfully", i didn't see the hour glass and the entire process didn't take so long. Now how can i be sure that the software has indeed been upgraded cos i don't see any major difference yet?

* Applications: 5.0.0.419
* Software Platform: 4.2.0.179
* File name: 9530AMEA_PBr5.0.0_rel674_PL4.2.0.179_A5.0.0.419_MT S_Mobility.exe
* File size: 111.61MB

Note: The Software Platform and Applications version numbers can be found under Options-About screen on the handheld.

Instructions for installing either version on ANY carrier's 9530:

1. Download the above OS file to the PC then install it to the PC by running (double clicking) the file you downloaded.
2. Go to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and delete the file named "vendor.xml."
3. Plug in BB and double click on "Loader.exe." It's located in the same place as the above vendor.xml file.

The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization."
If, for some reason, you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507, simply connect to the PC again and run Loader.exe again and it should load the OS to the device.

Go to Options-> About

The version you are using is stated there and should match with the upgrade package.

I just used Win 7 and it was in the apploader folder. I never went to the virtual store. Upgrade went great and fast.

I just installed .419 this evening -- my first "non-official" OS. So if Verizon is going to release another OS for the Storm I it will probably be now.

Thanks for the link and instructions, upgrading was a snap -- as is this release compared to .328. I've read about a few of the bugs but I'm glad I upgraded anyway. Everything seems to work better on mine so far. I don't have a large number of downloaded apps -- maybe 10-15 or so, so maybe that's why.

Oops I just realized that I had installed the newer package version -- 808. Not sure if there's a difference other than the new radio file.
