I downloaded it but it seems to still look for a Bluetooth puck.

What is A-GPS? How do you get it to work with Google Maps?

Great review Hudres.

One comment - with TomTom ONE GPS units down to about $99-129, they can be amortorized in one year.

I find the maps and POI's are better with a standalone, but the traffic and updates with a phone-based solution are a big help.

I can user Google Maps & BB Maps on my Storm on the Vodafone carrier in the UK without any problems (indoors and outside). BB Maps accuracy was pretty much spot on but GM was out by about 50 yards. Haven't tried it in a car yet though (will do that tomorrow).

My only question is, on my old Nokia n95e, I used to use Route 66. Do we know if it possible to get that on the Storm as I found it faultless?

Hey im pretty sure no one has found this yet so here you go, I found this on google's mobile help site.

@Thom (Google Employee) + 137 other people say this answers the question

Hi all,

The BlackBerry Storm uses a highly-customized GUI, which prevents Google Maps for mobile from being viewed in landscape mode. We're still working to integrate the app with this device, and we haven't yet put out a new release since the Storm has launched. I reallize you're all eager to use your internal GPS with Google Maps for mobile - and we're working to get an update soon. I can't give you a timeline as of today, but I'll update this group when I can give a more accurate picture.

Best,
Tom

Not having any luck with BBmaps. GPS is on and set to Location. I hit the button to start GPS navigation and it just sits there saying searching. Never finds anything, even when held by a window.

Any thoughts or ideas on what to check? I am on a BES, would there be anything in the policies that would prevent it or something along those lines?

Thanks

There is a button on the BBMaps app that looks like a satellite, did you press it? That turns on the GPS function.

BES Could be preventing it, the option is there to disable it.

If I don't have an icon for BB maps on my screen, or anywhere else for that matter, with my verizon Storm, where can i get it?

It would appear to me that the GPS is not unlocked on the Storm.
I have downloaded and can use the Google Maps feature, but the location is so far off as to render it pretty much useless. I can't tell if it is using GPS sat or cell triangulation but I THINK it is the latter (and it's not that good).

I have tried two third party GPS apps, neither of which appear to be able to access the GPS signal.

BB maps works just fine. I started the app and got 10 sats in less than 30 secs and it pinpointed my location very well.

The app I am looking for is a simple one. I want to be able to record a log file of my location, specifically while I do bike/run workouts then to be able to export that file as a GPX file. That's it. Nothing more. The bbtracker app appears to do just this and the app runs on the Storm but again, I get the error message: Failed to initialize GPS; GPS not allowed.

I have set my GPS Data Source to Device GPS, GPS Services to Location On and Location Aiding is enabled. Dunno what else to think except GPS is locked for third party apps.

Ummm, or maybe the apps you tried just don't support the GPS in the Storm?

If you search and read in these forums, you will find a lot of discussion of this. Including reports from people with Verizon Storms that are successfully using the built-in GPS with Garmin Mobile. The GPS is not locked. Many apps, including Google Maps, just need to be updated to work correctly with the Storm GPS.

Yes, I believe that is the button I stated I pushed. If you just lightly touch it, it pops up saying "start GPS navigation".

Ah, working now but my location was way way off. I closed out of bbmaps for about 10 minutes, then opened it again and if found some sats and pretty much pin pointed my location. It is even overcast and cloudy today in my area.

Now, hurry up gmaps

I just downloaded LifeInPocket and the internal GPS for my Storm works well.

It's a free navigation app allows you to use address for GPS navigation, business search plus Yelp review etc.

I downloaded it from LifeInPocket.com.
