Default T-Mobile vs. Verizon & Unlocked vs. Locked

Please Login to Remove!

So, I have totally been sold on the storm! I went to my local verizon store and got to see it and hold it. It was a bummer that that didn't have it charged. The lady told me they come out Friday and plan to have a lot in stock....if they sell out she said verizon will ship to your house with 2-3 shipping. She said If I want one I am pretty much guaranteed to get one.
So am now in need of an upgrade.....and what better timing then when the storm comes out.
I currently have T-mobile and have thought about switching to verizon to get the full benefits of the storm and the all the features from verizon. Well here is my dilemma. I owned the unlocked Iphone for one week and hated it. I had t-mobile at the time and could never get all the features the phone had to offer working properly. I love t-mobile and have been really happy with them....how ever their internet feature (edge) is slow. I thought of getting an unlocked storm but worry that I wont be able to access all the features it offers since I have t-mobile. I totally like the verizona $199 strom with a 2 year contract deal better then the unlocked storms on ebay for $500 plus!!! Any suggestions or tips for me??

as far as i know Verizon used different signal or technology in there phones and even if u unlock it, T mobile GSM signals wont be detected by it... I'm not an expert on this but there's tons of forums about it

Right now, no one really knows if you can buy a Verizon Storm and use it on T-Mobile.
Technically speaking, the Verizon Storm has the ABILITY to pick up T-Mobile's signal, it becomes a question IF Verizon will allow that to happen if a CDMA signal is present. We will all find out in.. 7 days...

Does T Mobile use SIM cards and will the Storm even have a SIM card slot? My wife just got a new 8320 from Sprint and it doesn't have a SIM slot so there is no way to take it to a GSM network. I imagine the same will be true for the Verizon version of the Storm.

The Lady at Verizon said to bring in my sims card from t-mobile so I can switch them out and keep the same number. So I assume Yes. Also comes with it's own memory card

i too am in the same situation. but i dont really see myself switching carriers just because of a phone. i love tmobile and their prices are the best by far. just wait until the phone comes out and people get a chance to mess around with it. as far as buying unlocked again wait until the phone actually is released

the storm has a sim slot. it is capable of all gsm/gprs signals domestic and international but verizon will block all if a cdma signal is available.

sprint does not offer the 8320, its the 8330, and it is domestic cdma only. the only bb that can do cdma and gsm is the 8830 from sprint and verizon.

Switch to Verizon. The coverage is way better (generally speaking).

VZW Storm will definitely work on T-Mobile network . . . in Europe !!! NOT in the US... It's Quad Band is comprised of Dual Band CDMA and Dual Band Euro/Asia GSM ... 2 + 2 = 4 . . .

The Vodafone Storm released in the UK is the true Quad Band GSM device with 2100 MHz UMTS/HSPA frequency for 3G connectivity....

This should help those folks who cant get any sleep thinking about this Tmobile SIM in a VZW Storm fantasy...

I was in a meeting with my VZW rep today and was playing with her storm.

Under Network settings... has choice of... GSM/UMTS, 1XEV, or Global.... Global is default setting..

So if its SIM Unlockable... set to GSM/UMTS means you can force it to use GSM with your SIM.

Wirelessly posted (bb8320TMO)

AFAIK world phone on the VZW/Sprint networks are not capable of picking up GSM signal frequencies used in North America.
That being siad, true GSM phones can pick up frequencies broadcasted in North America and other parts of the world. CDMA/GSM phone pick up CDMA signal in North America and GSM signal in other parts of the world.

Gee. That's weird. Look what I found...

QUAD BAND GSM/GPRS/EDGE. I believe that's what number two states. So QUAD BAND GSM, EvDO, then the UMTS 2100MHz band. This device isn't like the 8830 that is Dual Band CDMA and Dual Band GSM. The 9530 is obviously a true Quad Band GSM device IN ADDITION TO it's Dual Band CDMA, and the UMTS band.

Gee. That's weird. EvDO and quad-band GSM, but no CDMA.

CDMA is the type of wireless technology.

I posted this in the sticky above as well...

A call to RIM has cleared things up.

9500 and 9530 are the exact same devices with different features enabled/disabled. The 9500 has the CDMA/EVDO functions disabled, while the 9530 has the North America GSM functions disabled. So, yes the Storm does have Quad-band GSM and CMDA/EVDO; however, it depends on what version you have as to what carriers are possible.

Morale of story: You cannot use a 9530 on US GSM carriers because the North America GSM function is disabled. You need to use an unlocked 9500.

Are you saying that voice calls use EVDO? I don't think so. So, a specification that lists EVDO but not CDMA does not automatically mean (in my mind) that the device would support voice calls over CDMA.
