Disagree. Why add hardware and cost into manufacturing if the hardware will simply remain idle? It doesn't really benefit anyone.
On the contrary, it actually costs more to manufacture similar models with different options. To make them all the same would reduce cost to manufacture.

Speed, and not everyone has unlimited plans.

Wifi is much faster than EDGE.

Source please? From everything I've seen, no wifi. I can only wish, however, that it does.

Not bothered about GPS as I can usually find out where I am... but no WIFI?

They must be joking if they think that an internet capable, 2G phone is going to sell without WIFI.

BlackBerry Storm 9530 - A Perfect Storm of Features - Reviews by PC Magazine

The GPS radio is open to both Verizon's own VZ Navigator and third-party applications such as BlackBerry Maps and Google Maps.

WiFi is essential IMO. I have had the Pearl and the Curve with WiFi, browsing and phone calls on UMA is really great! I have been in places where there is NO reception from ANY carrier, BUT the house had WiFi and Voila! I can make calls and get all my emails. Browsing internet on my curve is also MUCH better. So, Wifi, IMO is a must on any BB I consider.

Besides, right now, calls on TMO network using UMA does not count against your minutes.

But the whole thing is, it's not on T-Mobile, and Verizons coverage footprint is much larger than that of T-Mobile. 3G technology along with GPS is enough drain on the battery itself. The addition of Wifi, would probably cause problems.

"third-party applications such as BlackBerry Maps and Google Maps" = non-cripped gps?

I understand that, but why cant you use Wifi anyway? I use it ALL the time and it is pretty stable. I do agree that the battery life might be compromised by the addition of it, but if it becomes a HUGE issue, turn it off. Or simply get one of these.

Sorry, but I see the benefits of it. Especially in my corporate network. While I do know that Verizon has a bigger footprint, I LOATHE their BB support. Maybe the release of the Storm will improve it. I do love a lot of apparent features on the Storm, I am waiting to really get my hands on one.

Hell would have to freeze over first. My bet is you have to pay for VZnav and no 3rd party apps. Since the article is from PCmag I am going to take that comment with a grain of salt. Until I hear first hand from Boy Genius or the like all bets are off that Verizon has unlocked the GPS for 3rd party apps.

Sorry but this is a crock excuse. Vodafone themselves sell just about every HTC device for WM platform using WiFi for over 4yrs now! They have no reason to have WiFi removed. Plus many corporate buildings are fortifide with Granite/Limestone and heavy girder steel frames that kills cellular signals. Having WiFi/UMA/PBX support allows 1 phone to have 1 number both in the office and out. Bold, 8320, and 8120 support this so why not the Storm? I'll tell you why, it would kill Bold's sales simple as that.

Adding the WiFi chipset and connection is negligable nowadays. Especially since the multi-core chipset supports it natively; and you take out that function during manufacturing or the assembly process. This isn't 1995 where WiFi was expensive enough to put into laptops, let alone phones.

Looks like the WIFI chip didn't fit on the Storm motherboard, according to RIM's CEO.

I just did a new VZN contract for LG Voyager with somebody. I was surprised at how cheap the Premium Package was ($20/mo). It included unlimited txt, navigator "GPS", browser, and email (not push like BB but you can access it). I thought that was way cheap for a bundle of stuff. Not as extensive as BB service with true GPS but still.
