Exclamation PLEASE RATE: T-MOBILE USA / 3G Performance

Please Login to Remove!

Hello all you U.S. T-Mobile BB 9700 users,

Please be so kind to rate the performance of the new 3G network, specifically when it comes to data usage other than receiving emails, such as the internet, etc. What would really be interesting is a side-by-side comparison of both ATT and TMO from those select few users who have both services (work and private?).

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and impressions,

Best, Nick

I am very pleased. Was with TMo about 4 years ago and had to switch to ATT because of spotty service. Since buying the 9700 with UMA I don't think I've dropped one call. Service is excellent, pricing is very good, and the no contract plan is leading edge thinking, I don't know why every carrier isn't doing it, Oh, I do know, to keep unhappy customers. I'll be travelling to Europe in a few weeks and will give a further test but so far I couldn't be happier.

A couple of friends have the 9700 on T-Mobile and complain that the AWS footprint is extremely limited. Outside of a few major metropolitan areas they drop down to EDGE all the time. It's all about where you'll be spending the majority of your time. The good thing about T-Mobile is that their plan prices are excellent.

I have tmobile and it does have some spotty areas where it drops down to edge. My sister has Att and she seems happy with what she has but I do not think she uses it as much as I do.
I do have a great price plan though!

Coverage is better than I'd expected, but still fairly lousy. (Which tells you more about my expectations than their coverage.) My Verizon data card frequently has 3G where my 9700 is only on EDGE.

For an AT&T comparison, I've been in areas where I've been on GPRS (yes, GPRS) and had friends with iPhones on EVDO.

So I wouldn't subscribe to TMo based on hopes of 3G bliss. Based on my experience with Verizon, their hype about their vast 3G coverage is well warranted, so if 3G data coverage is your goal, you may want to decide whether it's worth dealing with their downsides.

Edit: Also, I've been in areas of heavy TMo 3G coverage and had it frequently go back to GPRS for a few minutes, then EDGE, then 3G. So it seems there's still some teething.

I just got my T-mobile 9700 on Wednesday. I have this problem at home and occasionally on the road when I place calls. It'll be on 3G and go down to GPRS and back to EDGE and finally to 3G once I end the call.
