I think that RIM is playing all their cards and opening up to more a more diverse market. I'm sure they have done their research and noticed the trends in the technology market are moving more towards a highly interactive device for consumers. Not that they are moving away from their "bread & butter", I see it as they are introducing more products to an already superior product line.
This product won't appeal to all BB users, more of a 15-29 age range that look for those bell's and whistle's on a mobile phone. This is definately not a device aimed at individuals with high level security clearence or executives, more of a main-stream MTV sort of appeal. I am sure that they will have some form of success with these devices, look at the popularity that the BB has now.
