Default 8310 GPS with no data useagle possible?

Please Login to Remove!

I am in the market for a new phone soon since my 2 year contract is set to expire. I am considering the 8310 because of its built in GPS, but after reading the forums here, I noticed that there is no way to use the 8310 as a standalone gps? Is that correct?

I am forced to use one of the software listed here:
BBMaps
Telenav
Wayfinder
Google Maps
Garmin
Telmap

And all of them require me to download maps as I use them, and some of them even have a monthly fee?

Is there any way around this?

No.

Incorrect. Options > Advanced > GPS, will pinpoint your exact location using GPS. If you want mapping and directional service, you will need an additional software application.

You have many choices, free choices. I have read a number of good reviews for Nav4All on this board, you might try it as well. Also AmazeGPS.

Good luck.

thanks for your replies.

So you said i can use the gps to pinpoint where I am. that is free, but in order to see where I am on a map, i have to download that map correct? I am not prepared to pay $$ for data plans just yet. I usually only use my phone for calls and I was hoping that I could use this phone as a gps navigator with no additional costs.

I think I might pass on the 8310 and wait for a cell phone that allows me to make simple calls and use it as a gps for free.

There are some navigation packages that use a memory card to store the maps so you don't then have to download anything and use the data connection.

I'm not sure though if there are any programs that work like this on the BlackBerry (yet) and you will have to pay for them (normally in the region of $70-120) so you might still be better off just getting a dataplan.

Why not get a GPS device, and "hope" it will give you free phone calls.
