Default GPS Enabled?

I would like to know if having "GPS" on a phone (BB 9000) is a standard function or a service which I must pay for? I can use Google Maps, and see where I am and travel on that program, but I am now trying to use other third party software, that requires GPS for it to work.

I actually downloaded a Runner's application to track my running progress as I run. This programs seems to need GPS for it work properly. When I launch the application SportyPal, I am stuck in "initializing GPS". My question is.. is "GPS" referring to the turn-by-turn feature that AT&T charges for.

GPS is free to use as it is paid for by US taxpayer dollars.

Some apps are free, other cost money and most require that you have a BB data plan activated on your account. GoogleMaps is a free application.

"GPS" is not referring to Telenav, at least I don't think it would be, but I do not know the app you are using.

To get the GPS signal, make sure that you have location services "on" and that you are outside with a clear view of the sky. It can take about 20 minutes, sometimes longer to lock on and get your precise (within 10 meters) position. Having GoogleMaps running will help since it uses cell tower data to approximate your location, making it easier for GPS to find itself.

The turn-by-turn feature that At&T charges for is either Telenav or AT&T Navigator which is $9.99 a month. I've found that it works pretty well.

There are other products but they may work differently.
