BB doesn't pick up emails when switching from wifi to 3G

I have an AT&T Bold (running newest 5.0.0.822 firmware) and typically I keep both Mobile Network and wifi turned on. I was in a wifi area today with the device connected through it while at the same time it was on 3G. The BB was working fine this way. After leaving the wifi area, it stayed on 3G with full signal, but wouldn't pick up emails anymore. I went to Manage Connections and turned Mobile Network off and on again. It immediately picked up all emails that had been queued up.
It's as if the data connection was "stuck" on the wifi after leaving that network and wouldn't switch back to using 3G. But like I mentioned, it had perfect signal on 3G, at least according to the network name and bars on the top right corner. I did not actually check the signal strength on the status screen though.
Anyone run into this or have suggestions?
