Do a search here on un-branded branded blackberrys. You'll find tales of woe. It may be an engineering model, a sample, whatever, and chances are you won't be able to use it.

See the article at the FAQ re buying off ebay. It applies generally to any case where buying a used blackberry. Good stuff.

Go to Options -- Status and type BUYR. A hidden menu will appear reporting on the Voice and Data usage along with any IT policy on the handset. If there are hours of calls and tons of data recorded the device is not new.

As others have commented correctly if they are pre-release handsets the PINs would most likely be banned on RIM's databases that would have rendered them unusable (at least for the data side).

You need to be careful where you source your handsets from.

Most likely it is one of the Chinese knock offs. Looks exactly like the BB, but has no PIN and cannot connect to RIM . Just about useless.

An unbranded Blackberry is not necessarily a chinese knock-off.

Try to activate it. Enter the PIN and IMEI on your BIS page and see if it's accepted.

Had that one today
Guy bought that one on ebay and he cant send emails
I asked him for PIN he couldn't find one
Software on that one is same as regular cell phone
I told him to pool battery out
and under there were two sim card slots
I told the guy that he bought fake one

When you have a BlackBerry data plan on your account, you can go to a page for AT&T's BIS (BlackBerry Internet Service) where you enter the PIN and IMEI of your device to identify it to AT&T. You need to do this with any BB you activate on BIS so your data flow finds your particular BlackBerry.

If the PIN is bogus, or if it's still associated with another person's account, you'll get an error message when you try to put it on your account.
