Default Maybe this is an old post but will try how can I use sms on a 7100i stumped? Thanks

Please Login to Remove!

Hi I just bought a used blackberry 7100i that uses nextel my husband and I have been with sprint since it was nextel for the walkie talkie usage. Now if I get a data plan sprint says I have to change to sprint network instead of nextel to get data but don't know if we can still walkie talkie back. Anyways my main question is I can't find on the phone how to sms message with my 7100i and have had sms sent to the phone but can't find them or access them. Want sms ability and still keep the walkie talkie. Will purchase the data if thats what it takes but they are weird about the details on the changes from nextel to sprint network for plans and access to everything we need. Thanks to anyone whom takes the time to help.

The 7100 series is a real oldie and I am not 100% certain that it is SMS capable. SMS is a phone application and it must be activated by your carrier. Adding a data plan should have nothing to do with SMS. The P-T-T feature is something else all together.

Probably a call to your carrier is in order?

The 7100t I had would do SMS . . . it's from the same generation/era. Agree it's a carrier question.

The 7100t and 7100i could not be more different....

The 7100i was iDen only, with PTT. No SMS... Much, much different.

It was a terrible decision by RIM to number them that way; thankfully the Department of BlackBerry Numbering Department came up with other ways to confuse us!

All I know about iDen is I've seen the term before. I figured it was just another flavor of mobile service. Didn't know about feature/functional limitations like that.

Thanks so my phone is pretty old I kinda new that but it had the walkie talkie so it was a sell from dotcells The sms I will ask sprint about I just tried to do the number+the messaging nextel. com that follows to do a sms or email I don't know and it would not got through the ptt I saw in the option and will research that thanks. So does my phone seem like a oldie in a way that its not data compliant? When I got it it seemed cool despite no camera. Thanks to all very much and your very quick you must have tech jobs no?

A Motorola developed network, used only by Nextel (RIP) and a few other companies.
Didn't consider SMS initially as SMS is part of the GSM spec - and iDen is, well, very proprietary. Very popular for the Push-To-Talk (PTT) feature popular with the trades and construction. Integrated Digital Enhanced Network - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nextel was ultimately bought by Sprint in perhaps the worst business acquisition of the decade.

A BB data plan could get you email, but not SMS as that is a phone issue, which your device probably does not support, as said by several of us above. You need to call Sprint and talk to them.
