Default Data/Calling specs?

Please Login to Remove!

I don't see this answered anywhere yet but one of my favorite things about the Bold and 3G on AT&T is the ability to send/receive e-mail, browse internet, do blackberry messenger etc all while on a call. I was previously not able to do this with my curve on verizon but does anyone know if the tour will allow that? is it a device limitation or a network thing?

Thanks

It's a bit of a device limitation and a network limitation. The 9630 will have EVDO Rev A, which supports VoIP to the handset. This means that all calls are treated like data connections (from the carriers view, not from a billing perspective). As a result, they can push multiple data streams down the line at any time, meaning you can get emails and other data usage while on the phone. As far as I know, Verizon Wireless has not yet activated this feature on their network, meaning that you will not have this capability on VZW. I am unsure about Sprint. However, once they do support this capability, they should be able to flick a switch and turn it on overnight for 9630 users.

The Bold and other GSM phones have had this capability because the carrier technology is different.

thanks, appreciated the info. I doubt I'll be able to get a straight answer from a VZW rep(or at least have 2 of them tell me the same thing) so hopefully when the phone is released I can test it.

if anyone else has thoughts or knowledge let me know!

Incorrect. Rev A only provides data for Email, Web etc. Voice calls are handled the same as any other device. Voice and data will not be simultaneous sessions.

I doubt you will ever see data and voice simultaneously on any CDMA carrier.

They aren't going to be doing anything new beyond Rev A or make any big network wide changes. All of their resources are going to be devoted to improving existing coverage, maintaining speed, and preparing for LTE deployment.

When you get your first VZW LTE based device, then you'll probably have data and voice together!

I can understand that. As someone who wants to use WebEx on my phone (and view slides and talk at the same time) this is a big deal. If I were AT&T with the Bold/iPhone, I would be pushing this.

Simultaneous Voice and Data is works on 3G GSM and not the current EVDO RevA ... I agree with the above, we probably won't ever see it on EVDO RevA ... This will be a feature of LTE though. It was one of the things I liked about the 3G iPhone ... Loved being able to google something while on the phone.

forgot the cliche' argument that now more than ever time is money and effective productivity is paramount for a second....

I can say that for me personally, I've noticed a incredibly huge convenience factor and quality of usage since switching from VZW over to the Bold on ATT. a long conference call or even customer service phone call could have taken me off e-mail, blackberry messenger, and web for an hour or so before and this is no longer the case.

With hands-free laws in CA you're basically always on speakerphone so it gives you the ability to function while on calls as if you've got a computer in front of you which regardless of work or play is becoming more of a necessity. it has become obvious lately that it's a deal breaker when I'm in EDGE areas or GPS and I find my device and work to be crippled.
