Default Questions About Curve

Please Login to Remove!

Hi All,

I have a couple questions about this phone as I might transition back to a blackberry...

- Does it support IMAP mail?
- Can I use the email service with WiFi instead of data service from T-Mobile?
- What is the max size for its memory card storage?
- What kind of things can you NOT do with just WiFi?
- How would you compare it to the iPhone (which is what I'm using now)?

Yes, BIS supports IMAP email through your BlackBerry Data Plan.

Most of them.

You can't fairly compare the two. They are dissimilar in too many ways and are targetted for different types of users.

Thanks for answering my questions... I really like the fact that my iPhone can use its email client over wifi instead of me having to subscribe to a data plan, I thought the Blackberry can do this too since it has Wifi...

What is the WiFi used for in the Blackberry anyway?

I don't have the 8320 yet, but I have been wondering the same, and it is keeping me from buying one just yet.

I have read conflicting accounts with regard to wifi. Some say that they can access the internet and their email accounts over wifi with no data plan. Others say that you must have a data plan.

I am a T-Mobile user with phone and text. I would like to pick me up an 8320 and insert my SIM with current plan, and just access the internet when wifi is available.

The iPhone option seems to be out since the 4.6 bootloader prevents unlocking ones phone for T-Mobile use. The 8320 sounds to be the best option/choice. I need to find one to try out, I guess.

Same reason I have not got the 8320 yet... if I can do email and internet over wifi, I'd jump back to the Blackberry ASAP... iPhone is not for the messaging abusers..

Or perhaps the difference is whether the 8320 is from T-Mobile, or an unlocked straight from RIM model. Just a thought.

Does T-Mobile alter/cripple a phones native capabilities in order to force one into paying more?

I am looking at buying an unlocked version.

I don't know if T-Mobile has disabled email through wifi but it does make sense in a way because to have email service on the phone itself, it needs the proper service books - which the carrier must provide...

the email does not work over wi-fi because you are not paying for blackberry email service, therefore the service is not setup on blackberry's end to push email to you. you could, however, access your mail providers webmail site, if they have one.

Thanks for clarifying things everyone... how are the IM clients? Will they work over just wifi?

You can hardly do anything with just the wifi. However, I am pretty sure you can check email at gmail.com and stuff like that where the email is located at a specific website.

yea you can check your email through the wifi browser and the new jivetalk supports pretty much all type of IM services through wifi. alot of apps wont work through wifi but they are being updated to support it. its still better to have bb data but wifi can be usable too.

well you have Jivetalk, which is a much better client than most any IM app i have seen. You can log into multiple services simultaneously, send files, use WIFI, view status updates, see avatars, etc. BeeJive :: JiveTalk mobile messenger - instant messaging to go

You can check your e-mail without the blackberry data plan using wifi, but its going through the broswer, going on the website and logging in.

That actually really defeats the whole purpose of the blackberry.

With the BIS (blackberry internet service), you create an account, and in the account set up which e-mail address you want coming to your device (up to 10 of your own + carrier blackberry e-mail address). Each e-mail address will have its own mail box/folder on your screen and e-mails "self check" themselves. There's no need to check them, it comes to the phone. It works exactly like text messaging. Someone sends, and it just pops up, very easy and fast.

I don't know a better way to put it, but that's what your paying for, that and data services (blackberry web, blackberry messenger, etc etc). It all goes through blackberry servers.

How do the build in IM clients in the Curve compare to Jivetalk... my friends T-Mobile Curve has (as far as I see) AIM, MSN, and YAHOO.

They do honestly all pale in comparison.
