My trackball is looser and makes more noise than the Pearl. We have 3 curves right now and based on usgae it seems the noise slowly goes away with breakin or lint. LOL

I agree, mine was pretty noisy at first, has quieted down though - like you said, probably the lint and dust.

Default trackball on curve

Is it the trackball or the rollers beneath that give the Curve the loose feel. Any ideas?

My guess is that the slot should be tighter.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8320/4.2.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100)

I've had the assembly out. I don't see any real way to tightening anything.

My track ball, when pushed in is below the surface of the phone.

I did a test. I removed the trackball assembly from my Pearl and the trackball assembly from my curve as I had the same scraping sound with the curve as mentioned above.

Since the Trackball was so dirty on the Pearl I installed the ball from the Curve into the Trackball assembly from the Pearl. What I noticed is the ball rolled much smoother and there was no scraping sound. It seems the rollers in the trackball assembly are where the difference is.

One other thing I noticed when I removed the trackball assembly from both devices the Pearl had the internal retaining ring that kept the assembly secure in the device whereas the Curve did not have the internal ring so I installed the one from the Pearl and there was no more rattliing when I shook the Curve.

I know it's been said before, but I'd gladly pay a premium for better build quality.

I've had the pearl, went to the 8300 (then the iPhone ) and now I'm back with the 8310... something about the trackball is definatly different on the 8310. I went to my local at&t store to exchange it and all the models in their inventory were the same.

Hopefully it will smooth out many others' have.

Thanks for replying -- it's good to hear that it isn't just me who noticed this issue. I'm wondering if I should return my 8310 for a new one (I've got a few days left of my 30-day return window with AT&T), or if I should just accept that the trackball now sits this low and deal with it. I'm also interested if anyone knows a way to fix it myself if it gets worse down the road.
Don't bother. All of them have the same problem. Just a build quality problem with the model.

I have noticed that the trackball action on my 8310 is "grittier" than what I remember on my 8300. The performance is great...no complaints here, but there is a definate difference in the "feel" of the trackball rolling.

Did it also make the rollerball feel more like the Pearls? Less gritty, smoother roll?

Can you post a pic of the ring & where the ring is installed? Is it internal or external to the roller assembly?

The 2 parts suppliers I found that were selling the assemblies for <$15 both said the assembly for the Pearl DID NOT come with the retaining ring. I'm going to do some searching and see if that ring is available separately.

As stated in my post based on my test I believe the rollers in the assembly are what causes the gritty feeling I don't believe it has anything to do with the actual trackball or the internal retaining ring.

I cannot post pics but you can go here to see what the assembly looks like including the retaining ring under the outer ring.

My curve (3 weeks old) has a slight rattle compared to my year old 8100.

My other curve (the one that's on sale) has a tighter feel to the trackball. I guess I opened up the wrong curve to use 3 weeks ago, lol.

I disassembled two 8320's and neither had the retaining ring. I'm assuming they decided they didn't need the ring?

As for the "gritty" feel I believe that was deliberate to avoid the trackball problems with dirt/lint getting in and making the ball quit working in one direction or another.

Yeah, I noticed it on my new 8320-it almost sets my teeth on edge.

I'm going to try to install the retaining ring from my Pearl to my Curve and see it that helps.

My wife's pearl is ridiculously more fluid than my curve. If anyone figures out a way to slick up the curve, let me know. Did the retaining ring pan out?

I'll toss another "me too" onto this thread. I just bought an 8310 today... the trackball is a bit rougher than my 8100 that it's replacing... not a big deal though.
