Question Exchange Upgrade and BESX Move

Please Login to Remove!

Hi all,

Looking for some advice on best practice here.

I currently have a single server running both Exchange 2003 and BESX 5 and it is working fine with about 150 mailboxes with 40 on the BESX.

We have recently installed a new server that is going to be running Exchange 2010 and BESX so we can decomission the original.

My question is the best way to transfer over these two complicated systems; Shall I move the mailboxes over first and then the BESX accounts or shall I move the BESX accounts over first and then move the mailboxes?

(Assuming that it is possible for two BESX installs to transfer accounts)

Looking for the least bumpy road here as it is a live system. Doesn't have to be done in a rush so it can function for a week or so with only one move done.

Any advice would be appreciated.

If the new server is in the same AD domain:
it is not neccessary to install a new BESx, you could use the current.
setup the Exchange 2010 environment, so that it matches the needs for the BESx
(Configuring a Microsoft Exchange 2010 messaging environment - Installation and Configuration Guide - BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Microsoft Exchange - 5.0.2)
move the besadmin mailbox to the Exchange 2010 Server
update the mapi profile for the BES
move one user to the Exchange 2010 Server, test.
then move the other users, either all, or some reasonable amout at at time.

If you want to install new BESx:
get a new BESx from RIM (free),
configure the current sql database to accept remote connections, and/or move the current SQL database to the new server:

KB03112-How to move the BlackBerry Configuration Database to a new Microsoft SQL Server instance

Then, the old bes still should function.
Install the new BESx, and during the install point the installer to the correct database.
move the besadmin account to the new server
recreate the mapi profile on both BES
move one testuser using the BES console to the new server, test
move the other users
move the mailboxes for the users with the exchange console
delete the unused BES instances in the BES console
uninstall the old BES.

explained in detail here:

Thanks for the info.

Whilst waiting for a reply on this I have been doing a bit of digging and a few people have mentioned using the 'Transport Tool', within the resource pack, to move accounts from one BES to another. Is this approach do-able? Or shall I look at a total DB move to avoid losing other config?

I am thinking that I will move the BESX DB first, then install a new BESX and then tackle exchange afterwards.

I have no experience with the transport tool. For me, it looks that using the transport tool, you can make a migration with nearly 0 downtime for the users. But the drawbacks are possible loss of BES settings.

The larger your userbase, the more seems the transporter the right choice.

But I am sure someone else will have a better opinion then my guess.

Transporter worked fine for me, only had 1% with issue and that was more exchange related than BES. Transporter works very well.

since you have a new server, install new BES Express on it and move users over with transporter. you can even use the same service account.

Quick One:

Does "Enter the name of the MAPI Profile" mean the name of the (current) Exchange Server?

Thanks. I have installed the resource kit but can't see the transport tool. Is it within one of the named tools?

Nevermind - I found it under SP3 as a seperate download. (MR for 5.0.3 doesn't have it!).

Update:

I tried installing the Transport Tool on the new BESX server logged in as BESAdmin. Installed ok but gave me a windows application error (access denied to the .exe.config file). The new BESX server is 2008 R2 64bit, could that be why?

So I have uninstalled it and installed it on a client PC - will it work from there?

Update - Got 35 users migrated so far without issue. Only a handful left (directors etc.).

Works fine from XP PC as long as you have got the SQL names correct - SQL express uses 'SERVERNAME\INSTANCE' for it's name. Plus you have to leave the IT Policy as blank to get the Preview to work without warnings, which is a limitation but fine for me.

Just thought I'd share my experience.

Ok, just one person left to migrate using the transporter. No issues so far but want to do the CEO when he is at HO just in case!

Once done am I right in thinking that all BESX services on the old server are no longer needed? Does this mean I can uninstall BESX on the old server without usability issues?

Hi Guys,

Thought I would ask for some more help on this thead as the history on this thread is still current.

For a catchup I am now in the process of migrating mailboxes from my Ex2003 server to Ex2010. I have got it working so that a migrated user from Ex2003 still has a working Blackberry in BESX even though they are now on the Ex2010 server (Ran some Powershell scripts for permissions on new server).

However, I have hit a snag. I have got a user on the Ex2010 server who didn't have a BB when he was migrated but now needs one. I have tried creating it but am not getting my usual wireless activation to work. I am left with the EPT Email in his mailbox and 'Contacting Server' on the Enterprise activation on said BB.

I checked the activation status on the Administration Service and found this:

"Waiting for recognition of valid user activation response before continuing with processing. "

Is this because my BESAdmin mailbox is still on the Ex2003 server? Do I have to create activations on user mailboxes that reside on the Ex2003 server and then migrate them afterwards? OR am I missing an additional permission on the Ex2010 server to allow the EPT email to be picked up / deleted by the BESAdmin account?

PS. I have double checked the data plan on the SIM for the BB and it is correct when compared to all the other BB's we have in operation.

Any help would be appreciated.

sounds like a missing permission on the new storage group
