Was just browsing GSM4World.com to see what parts they had and saw this:

6x Telescope for BlackBerry curve 8300 8310 8320 8330 Cellular phone accessories. Offering all accessories from Nokia,Sony Ericssons,Motolora,Samsung and more.

It's a clear hard case with a mounting slot so a little telescope zoom monocular type thing fits over the camera lens. Not sure if it's fixed at 6x only or can be adjusted, but there are times I wish the phone had a 2x or 3x optical zoom.

Has anyone used this or something similar?

That made me laugh. It seemed a bit much to me, but you're characterization really nailed it. I really just want some magnifying glass type thing that'll flip in front of the lens like some phones have.

that would be pretty cool to have..
especially when you want to take pictures of something funny and the object is far away
