Arrow RIM 4.2 desktop ... 4.2 SP1 download?

Please Login to Remove!

hi,
i saw available the 4.2 bb desktop software at:
https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads...93E4F3BB068C22

but there is also a 4.2 SP1 download. When I try to apply this SP1 patch or whatever it is, it simply removes my entire BB desktop apps.

what is the purpose of this SP1 installer and has anyone successfully installed it? what is the version of your about box supposed to read after this........ thanks

Device Manager is not the same as Desktop Manager.

Installing DEVICE Manager 4.2 SP1 after installing Desktop Manager 4.2 does indeed uninstall Desktop Manager 4.2.

Device Manager 4.2 SP1 is actually version 4.2.0.12. The version installed with Desktop Manager 4.2 is 4.2.0.7. If you install DEVICE Manager 4.2 SP1 BEFORE Installing Desktop Manager 4.2, Device Manager 4.2 SP1 will not be overwritten.

I can not find anything in the BBKB on what the update is for.

Device Manager is part of Desktop Manager. Dont bother installing Device Manager 4.2 SP1 unless you only want the drivers and non of the Desktop Manager functionality.

...and considering what DM4.2 offers, it'd be nearly stupid to do so...

yes I understand that, but the drivers + device mgr software are newer in the SP1 version.. it isnt possible to install them together? I am still confused why RIM has posted both of these on the same page if they are intended to be mutually exclusive.

You can not install Desktop Manager v4.1 and Device Manager 4.2 SP1 at the same time. The technical reason you can not install them both at the same time is because they are packaged as MSI installs. When you install Device Manager 4.2 SP1 it checks for, and detects, Desktop Manager 4.2 as a previous version and proceeds with the upgrade.

Are you experiencing a particular problem that you feel you need the newer version of Device Manager? Just because the version is higher does not mean its better and it must be installed.

Exclamation Desktop Mangager & SP1 notes

Here's the scoop: There are two files where you're looking. One is the "complete" application (4.2) which includes the device manager. The other is "just" the device manager (SP1).

If you want to have the latest & greatest device manager, you'll need to install IT first (that is, install the SP1 file first). THEN install the "complete" package.

The installation software for Desktop Manager is smart enough to notice that there is a newer component (in this case, that SP1 version above) and not squish / overwrite it.

If you do this in order (SP1, then the "complete" package) at the end of all of this, you can do a Help/About and you'll see that the device manager application is, in fact, at SP1 levels.

NB: However - it STILL doesn't work with Office2007 beta, just in case anyone is wondering. I'm pretty sure it has a lot to do with Outlook2007's great new contact record format. Everything else sync's just fine except new contacts - especially contacts with pictures in them.

If you have installed the desktop manager then you have device manager, it is part of the desktop manager install.

Default 4.2 device manager with 4.1 desktop manager

Saw this thread and found a use for the separate Device Manager 4.2 install...

I've been using a blackberry 7105t for about a year and just picked up a new Blackberry Pearl yesterday - very nice indeed. However, my employer is running an older version of BES (for Lotus Domino) and the new Desktop Manager 4.2 software kept crashing with a Visual C++ Runtime Error. Every time I attempted to connect to the BES, the application would crash so I could never switch the server over to the new PIN. Was beginning to wonder if I had a new shiny black paperweight...

I found that if I install (on a clean system) Device Manager 4.2 SP1 for the Pearl driver and then install the Desktop Manager 4.1, it successfully pairs the old 4.1 Desktop Manager with the new 4.2 Device Manager. Using this combination, I was able to update the registration on the BES to my new PIN. Life is good...

I don't use the Desktop Manager too much other than for backups since I use wireless synchronization, so I may reinstall Desktop Manager 4.2 for the Media Manager.

Unhappy Help - Desktop Manager 4.2 screwed up my RIM Virtual Serial Port

I have been using my BB Standard Modem with my 7130c for the last 3 months just fine. Downloaded and installed Desktop Manager v4.2 2 weeks back and it deleted the Standard Modem & the RIM Virtual Serial Port. Instead it setup RIM Virtual Serial Port v2. Tried setting up a Standard Modem, but it would not recognize the COM port this RIM Virtual Serial Port v2 was tied to. Downgraded to Desktop Manager v4.1.1 after a clean uninstall and it still will not setup the RIM Virtual Serial Port or the Standard Modem. Tried the repair option a few times. Finally went into Add Hardware and tried adding the RIM Virtual Serial Port by pointing to the driver RIMSerial.inf under C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Modem Drivers. The add new wizard finishes with an error saying -'A error occured durind the installation of the device. The system cannot find the file specified'. The only option this screen gives me is 'Finish'. However, as long as I donot press finish there is a little message in my system tray which says new hardware has been installed and ready to be used. If I open Device Manager, I can see the new RIM Virtual Serial Port attached to a COM port and it is enabled. The minute I press finish on the add new Hardware wizard, this RIM Virual Serial Port disappears. I travel a lot and need to use my 7130c as a modem. Would appreciate any advice. Thanks

I've got the same problem: the installation of 4.2 software on the laptop removed the functionality of my BB7290 as a laptop. Reading this post, I understand that downgrade (even after clean uninstall?!) doesn't help much... Is there anyone to indicate how should we get back our BB modems? Thanks a lot!
