Default Any chance the Curve could support MicroSD Wifi?

Please Login to Remove!

Came across this:

Spectec Computer Co., Ltd.

Any possibility this could work in the Curve someday???? Adding wifi to this beast would make it damn near PERFECT.

I know there was a big movement to hack wifi into the treo via the SD slot a ways back, prob more difficult with the BBerry considering the security of the OS. With the more consumer nature of a device like this or the pearl, this would be a really nice feature to be able to add-

Thoughts??

The problem is you'll need drivers to make it work with BB

Lightbulb Won't Work

I don't see it working in any of the current multimedia BlackBerries currently featuring a MicroSD card. That is because the firmware interfaces to the MicroSD slot assuming there is a storage card there, in a strict file data I/O manner. It is not sending wireless signals to that slot, nor waiting to listen for wireless traffic to come in off the MicroSD card slot; it rather is using that slot to place files and look for files only.

Could perhaps the Curve support this feature one day, it could, but that would require a big update to the firmware, which would only come after RIM's support and the carrier's support. Right now carriers seem to be hesitant to throw WiFi on to too many devices because that takes away from revenue generated from SMS text messaging, MMS messaging, BlackBerry data plans, and even Voice plans (a la Skype clients). You have to remember WiFi is evil in the Corporate Wireless Network Carrier game, because when people are connected to their local Linksys Access Point, they are no longer utilizing paid services and being forced to pay the Corporation for the privilege of connectivity.

This is vaporware. They announced this back in October of 2006 and nothing has surfaced yet. A few people at HowardForums contacted SpecTec and they pretty much said they have encountered some problems with it working on popular devices (namely the Motorola Q). So don't hold your breath for this.

You could always wait for T-mo's 8320 (w/WiFi) coming in late July.

Late July? Doesn't AT&T have a 90 day exclusive starting 5/31?

Here's my thing on it. I had a PPC that had an SD WiFi card in it. the thing stuck out of the top like a SOB. Looking at that picture, it seems that it's also longer than a normal MicroSD, just like the SD WiFi card. Won't work imo. I mean, if one drops, go ahead and get it, what's the worse that can happen? You make some BS excuse why it didn't work, and you return it. Yeah, ok, maybe you have to pay a little for restocking, but you'll know for sure.

My T-mo rep said the 90 days does not apply to their 8320, which will have WiFi. The target release is end of July.

8300 and 8320 are different devices. So I can see how the 90 day exclusive wouldnt apply.
