Default Sync'ing ... not a simple thing!

Please Login to Remove!

The PocketMac website leads one to believe that PocketMac makes sync'ing between a BB and a Mac is a simple thing. I have discovered just the opposite over the last 48 hours ... and I am a reasonably competent computer user.

What explains the troubles I have encountered? I have a new BB 8703e and an iBook G4. Why should I encounter any problems? I just want to sync iCal events and To Dos, as well as contacts in my Mac address book. What is so difficult about that?

PS ... You should see the results of the last sync! What a disaster. Good thing I backed-up my data before sync'ing with PocketMac.

One solution is to try out MissingSync -- lots of users here have reported more consistent and reliable results with it. Of course, you'll lose the ability to sync bookmarks and install apps from your Mac...

What I did was rethink what I wanted to sync to my BB. I sync only one way from my Address Book and keep all-day events and timed to-dos on my desktop.

If you're interested, my set-up is detailed a bit more on my blog:

CrackBerry and the Macintosh: One Month In « AC on the WP

Hope that helps!

After erasing Pocket mac. Reinstalling.
Erasing again.
Installing Missing Sync.
Now the problem is I can only sync Mac--BB
Not BB-->Mac.

I went to isync and cleaned out the sync history.
went back to Pocket Mac. Same problem.

And...How do I sync so it saves all settings from the Desktop to Ringones.

Thanks!

Keep reading the other threads in this forum.

To Dos is invariably the weakest aspect. I continually lose my To Dos from the Mac but they still remain on the BB.

Apparently it is difficult. Even the folks trying to sync between .Mac and their desktop have difficulties. And if Apple is not making this easy for Apple apps then us BB users are most definitely on the fringe.

Make sure you're running 10.4.9.

If you're interested in the M/S product then delete all files for Pocket Mac before installing the M/S. Save those backups. The M/S is still very much a v1.0 product, IMO.

Sorry, it just Doesn't Work(tm).

Hi AC:

Read your blog. Thanks. I have about 8 iCal categories. I see that you only have 5, including PocketMac, in your setup. Why do you only sync the PocketMac category and not the other 4?

Some of my iCal categories apply to other people. For example, I have a category for my daughter so that I can see what is happening on her schedule.

Final Question .... What is meaning of "two-way sync"?

Thank you.

Just wait for the next update. I'm with you. It sucks.
I backed up my BB to my work PC just to be safe till then and will do so prior to the next update.

two way sync = BB to Mac and Mac to BB instead of 1 way sync which would only go, one way.

Short answer: After my first corrupt sync I decided to play it safe!

Long answer: Two of my calendars are read-only -- one from Apple with holidays and one with birthdays straight from my address book.

The 'previous' calendar contains all my events and to-dos from my pre-BlackBerry days.

Finally 'Desktop Only' contains those events that I know will not sync successfully to my BB -- specifically all-day events and timed to-dos

That means data that can be synced both to and from your BlackBerry, as opposed the one-way sync to my BB from my address book.

This setup has worked for me so far, but there's still the odd glitch or two with info entered on the BlackBerry and then transferred back to my Mac...
