Default This weekend's GPS debacle using Tour (plus GPS sport watch question)

Please Login to Remove!

I was on my way to surprise a friend at an event in San Diego this weekend.

I had not yet used GPS on the Tour but suddenly I needed it when I realized the directions I had were wrong.

I pull over, open up Apps and go into BB's Maps. It was terrible...The UI and the experience. It didn't offer directions, it didn't pinpoint where I was, and it couldn't find the location I wanted to go.

So I go to Google within the browser and download Google Maps which immediately recognized my location and found the place I wanted to go. But
it took me 15 minutes to scramble through all this technology only to resort to Google.

All that said...

What application are you guys using for directions?

What's the best GPS app that is 95% correct with directions?

Any apps give real-time traffic reports?

AND ONE MORE... Is there a BB app that acts like the Garmin and Suunto GPS Sport watches that will track my distance running/hiking?

Sorry you had such a bad experience with BBMaps - was your GPS turned on? I noticed I had to enable mine after setting up the device.

I use Google Maps and it is almost always right on, uses the GPS to pinpoint me down to 10-20 meters and can get my location via cell tower when I'm inside. Google Maps also has "real" time traffic. I find it to be a bit delayed (20-30 minutes), but about the same information I can get anywhere else.

No idea about tracking but there was this offer for Beta software that seems to do something similar to what you're asking. No idea if he's got it working for Tour yet.

Default Thank you

ffejie - Yes, the GPS is turned on. I like Google Maps and you're right, it's accurate most of the time. I just wanted to be sure I wasn't oblivious to something better. And thank you kindly for the software info. I will look into it. It stands to reason, if they can fit fitness software in a watch with GPS then there is no reason why the same can't be provided for smartphones.

Check out the gps subforum for info on other gps options.

Gpslogger is really good at tracking, speed, distance and can export you saved tracks to googleearth and or garmin and similar formats.
