They're not updating. This is their first version of the software. In any event, it doesn't matter, just download it, delete the vendor.xml file and install it.

The O2 software is newer so unless you are a vodafone customer and want an official vodafone release, I wouldn't go to this over O2.

This is the smartest move. The other carriers OS's have some things fixed, but have other bugs and feature removal.

Some Members started to download and install these OS's on their T-Mo phones. Then people started calling the Rogers, O2 and Vodafone OS's "updates" and "upgrades" when in reality they were alternative OS's and NOT authorized updates from T-Mo, albeit the OS's had higher OS numbers than that on T-Mo phones.

I don't like that the alt OS's take away the ability to turn the auto-dim feature off. That's a deal breaker for me.

Then you are left using the original version which has more serious problems, IMHO.. And when T-Mobile does come out with their version, you won't be running their "official" version.

Um, they ARE updates. Any update to any software introduces new bugs.

The TMO answering delay and the trackball issue were big issues resolved by the other releases. The auto-dim issue is a good tradeoff to have those issues fixed.

Well, they are not T-Mo updates, so they legally and technically are not updates to a T-Mo phone.

Moreover, as I posted elsewhere, installing those other OS's voids the T-Mo warranty and extinguishes their obligation to provide tech support. [this per T-Mo's Terms of Service and Warranty book].

While I know some members swear by the other OS's and accept the trade-offs related to bugs and features, the fact remains that T-Mo has NOT authorized installation of other carrier's OS's and on the T-Mo site there are no updates or upgrades as of yet.

An update is an update, no matter what carrier you are with. In fact, I updated my phone and then called T-mo tech support. I told them I had updated my phone with the O2 update and they were still happy to help me.

Well the difference is the vendor files, which if you're installing for another networks device you will need to remove. Although you clearly don't have a problem with:

a) doing this, and
b) telling the people who are supporting you about it.......

........others might and that's why I posted the update. Some people have to stick by the legalities in order to get fully supported and the link is there for their benefit.

Also, the radio code (Platform.alx), from version to version, can, and in most cases will be updated to make changes that are specific to the carrier network that the OS is released for. Does this hurt you with installing it on your handheld? 99.9999% of the time, it won't.

This does not affect the OS itself (BlackBerry.alx), but it could affect your having EDGE service in an area that would typically have EDGE (if T-Mobile made a specific change for a specific tower but you are using an OS from Vodafone, for example).

Exactly what my problem was, I couldn’t connect to EDGE or anything for that matter. I was stuck on searching………

99.999% of the time, I'm not running the OS released by my carrier for any BB I have ever owned, and have never had this issue. If anything, my signal has improved.

I find this interesting since I have had all 3 different OS on my 8100 and never had an issue conecting to EDGE. I live in NYC and there are towers all over the place though. But i do see the point of the radio codes being different. As a user can we install a new OS and then change the radio code part and then update the OS with what ever radio code we want?

I don't get EDGE on my Vodafone 8100 in the UK, but I do in Norway. Figured that Vodafone just didn't do EDGE - is this the case?

Are there any release notes for this Vodafone update?
