Default OS: 8520 5.0.0.860/5.0.0.509 (Multilanguage)

Please Login to Remove!

BlackBerry Handheld Software v5.0.0.860 (Multilanguage)

Package Version: 5.0.0.860
Consisting of:

* Applications: 5.0.0.509
* Software Platform: 5.2.0.47
* File name: 8520wifiM_PBr5.0.0_rel860_PL5.2.0.47_A5.0.0.509_Wi nd_Hellas.exe
* File size: 117.78MB

Note: The Software Platform and Applications version numbers can be found under Options-About screen on the handheld.

* Download Software: https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads...2B6049B8D9A202

Instructions to install, regardless of carrier.

1. Download the above OS file to the PC then install it to the PC by running (double clicking) the file you downloaded.
2. Go to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and delete the file named "vendor.xml." Vista/Win7 users: In the apploader folder, simply click on "Compatibility files" to see the actual Vendor.xml file. Once you've got that - simply delete the vendor.xml file there (even if you've deleted or think you've deleted it in the folder previously) and voila, it will allow you to update to the newly installed OS!
3. Plug in BB and double click on "Loader.exe." It's located in the same place as the above vendor.xml file.

The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization."
If, for some reason, you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507, simply connect to the PC again and run Loader.exe again and it should load the OS to the device.

What's up with Wind?

Brand new carrier. Lower prices than competitors. Great devices. And their releasing OS updates faster than anyone else!?!? Kudos to the new guy!

What gives AT&T and T-Mobile! Get with the program!

They only have four devices to choose from though, and they do not offer a contract option so you have to buy the phone outright. They can give low costing plans because of this, as well as their plans have a lot of restrictions. A LOT. I was in charge of keeping up with competitive offers a bit ago, so I had to look into it a lot.

Outside of their small homezone area, you are charged additionally for every text, call, and kb. I can go all over Canada and not pay extra to use data or text, and I only get charged for calls when they are incoming and I am outside my local calling area.

Wirelessly posted (8520 (5.0.0.411))

Installed in 45 mins, runs really fast also. More free space than with .411 beta and boots up much faster. Better features than 4.6 as would be expected and browser is improved also. I will comment on battery life after a little more time.

Thanks for posting some feedback! No one ever really comments on the 8500 OS's in our forum, so it's nice to hear an experience instead of "Will this work even though I have a different carrier?"

I have tomorrow off, so I'm looking forward to do this update

I just downloaded did everything in the instructions, but my new 8520 still has the 4.6OS. Any ideas on why it wouldn't load the 5.0 OS?

Are you sure you have deleted the vendor.xml file in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader?

Upgraded in ~45 minutes (from rel470_PL4.2.0.137_A4.6.1.318). Reported incompatibility of the "Blackberry App World" & Facebook which were downloaded/installed. So far observed following changes (No issues as such)
a) The profile setting have changed - the volume is a discreet no. instead of low/med/hi.
b) Trying to figure out ways of separating the BB Messenger from SMS/MMS
c) 3rd party application icons are slightly bigger now and are degrading the resolution. I do not know if there is new configurable parameter for this...
d) Most of the configuration parameters are re-organised.

There is perceived difference (positive) in speed.

No, because you need a blackberry data plan to do the update.

Edit: I love the new OS, everything looks nice and the threaded sms is great! I've been waiting for that feature for awhile. It is nice and quick, and I don't have any issues with my theme icons like someone else posted.

Sorry, I misread and didn't give you the full correct answer. Because you need a BlackBerry data plan to upgrade to OS 5.0, you would need your SIM in the phone because that is the connection between the cell phone plan and the BlackBerry.

No sim, no calls, no text, no data.

Could not use the "Enterprise Messenger (OCS)" after the upgrade. The Options->Applications shows it but I can not see the icon anywhere.

Also, Had to reinstall the "Blackberry Messenger" as upgrade did not restore few apps due to compatibility.

I put this on the T-Mobile 8520. Other than getting the my faves app showing up on the home screen, with no way to remove it, I'm really liking this upgrade.
