Default Internal Memory 1GB - what for?

Please Login to Remove!

bold 9000 has
* 128MB device memory and
* 1 GB internal memory

my device also comes with 1GB media card in addition to the above

However when I install any application it says 23.3 MB free for installation.......

Can't internal memory of 1 GB be used for installation of Applications etc.?
if yes how ?

The 9000 "internal memory" is essentially a fixed "SDCard".

Applications can not be "installed" or "run from" internal memory or SDCards. The reasons for this are rather complex and involve OS and hardware design decisions and constraints. This isn't likely to change any time soon.

There were third party apps that would allow you to simulate running an application from internal memory or an SDCard. They would install the application when you want to run it, then uninstall it when you are finished and need the memory for something else. Unfortunately not all applications may be uninstalled without rebooting the device, and uninstalling can result in the application saved data being deleted as well.

On the other hand I have 27 third party apps, and 16 add-on apps on my 9700 (and had about the same number on my 9000) without running out of memory (97 MB still free). A well designed BlackBerry application is neither very large, nor consumes a large amount of applicaiton memory.

I've been using a blackberry for years and have upgraded the OS many times. I've gotten adept at removing wallpaper, sample video, language and voice activated dialing, etc..

But, I am confounded at how I continue to run out of memory. Your post above suggests there are things I am not doing to maximize memory. I have 5 applications installed, google maps, gmail, WorldMate and Ascendo. Thats it.. And yet I have about 6MB of free memory. See screen shots below. They indicate I have 850MB of device memory free but "Application Memory" is only ~7MB?

I am running 5.0.0.822 OS and have read here that there are consistent memory leak issues with this version. Is that part of my problem?

What else can I do? There are a few other programs I'd like to run, but don't seem to be able to at this point.

Thanks in advance,

Do a battery pull and see where you really are. All OS's leak memory and need periodic battery pulls. At 7MB you're close to the phone rebooting itself without your input or consent. It's just another BB fail. For some it is epic, for others a mere nuisance.

I used JL_CMDR to pare down the OS and that helped. How much email are you saving on the phone? I keep about 5 meg in that alone.

Maybe RIM will allow the use of the SD card in the future but not now.
would be nice.

I used .822 for over a month, and had both poor battery life (this may be unrelated, my Bold is 18 months old), and Out-of-memory every morning. IU was rebooting every morning, and sometimes more often.

Up graded to .900 a few days ago, and still have 18M free, using the same programs.
