Default Asked But Never Answered... Folder Icons

Please Login to Remove!

I have searched everywhere (including here and there) but while I find several threads started on this subject, I never seem to find the answer. So, here goes...

On the BlackBerry Bold (and I assume other recent BB devices), the default theme (Precision Zen or Precision Silver) has custom icons for the following folders:
  • Applications
  • Games
  • Downloads
  • Setup

However, any theme I create uses a default folder icon.

How on earth do I make my theme have the custom icons as seen in the default theme? I am pulling my hair out here, and I don't have much hair to start with. Someone please help me before I am completely bald!

Thanks.

I would suggest you get in direct contact with Hedone Hakwer from Hedone Design (HedoneDesign.com). He has gotten around this issue in several of his custom themes (others have as well I am sure).

Just tried that. He responded, saying that it can't be done.

What a bunch of crap. Someone on this planet has got to know how to do this.

That is certainly interesting, since I use one of his themes everyday. A custom theme that has the default precision folder icons.

Yeah, I know. I wish I could just find the answer to this, but it's obviously the best kept secret in theme development. My guess is he just doesn't want to share the "golden information."

The only thing that you can do is add one folder that is custom in theme builder...you can't add different folders/icons that look different for different things. It is a limitation in the theme builder

So then why do some themes show folders with icons like the top image, while others (like the one I made) show folders with no icons like the bottom image, as seen above?

All I want is the icons from the top image, not the plain, generic icons as seen in the bottom image.

You can change the icon of the folder by editing the folder and scrolling to the icon and changing it...but if you want a custom folder to match the icons and not the ones with the ones in the top image then you only have one folder to choose from. The ones in the top are still there just gotta change the icon

Let's make sure we are on the same sheet of music. I have created a simple today theme that has the look of the built-in Precision Zen theme, but adds the next 5 calendar entries above the bottom row of 6 icons. That's the only thing I have changed. When I load it to my phone, I get blank folders like this:

What I want is this:

Nothing more, nothing less. How do I do this? I'm not trying to make a custom icon myself, I just want these default icons for the folders instead of the blank folder icons. I hope that makes sense.

If you are saying that I need to change the folder icon once the theme is loaded onto the phone, then that doesn't work. These specific icons (as seen in the image directly above this paragraph) are not available when I scroll through the folder icons on my theme.

If you are saying that I need to do this from within the Theme Builder, then I am lost as what I need to do. If you are saying that it can't be done within the Theme Builder, then how are some designers able to do this? Why when I load some themes do these pre-made icons show up properly for Games, Applications, Instant Messaging, Downloads, and Setup?

I greatly appreciate your help, BCollins521, I just don't quite follow your explanation. Thanks again.

I know what you are trying to do and explain:

Custom Theme with the OS default icons.

Yep. Clearly that is a custom theme, and yet it has the OS default icons. Now I just need someone to tell me how.

And by the way, you might want to check your e-mail.

Do you change the folder structure in theme builder under "Theme the Application Screen" and under "Hierarchy"?

I'm a Mac house, so I will check into this on Monday when I get to the office (only place I have a Windows box). I just wanted to reply so you didn't think I was ignoring your help.

Thanks.

I don't touch my folder structure when I create a theme and when I load the theme on my phone it shows the default folders like you are talking about with the symbols (arrow, green game controller) on the folder...I have to edit the folder and then change the icon to the custom folder look. I can always change it back to the stock folders (again arrow, green game controller, etc).

@BCollins521: Sorry I didn't get back to you today. I have spent all day working on a project unrelated to this issue, so I will try again in the morning.

Default This definitely must be possible

I am so glad to finally find a thread that exactly and specifically poses the question I have had about making themes. I was compelled to try and find the answer after downloading a new theme, Precision Rotunda, off Crackberry.com today. (I can't post the link because I am generally a lurker here and am below 10 posts.) The downloads/games/etc. folders are skinned as in the original Precision theme, so it is clearly possible to include these folder icons in custom themes. Just wanted to give this thread a bump as it's been a week since any chatter.

Yeah, sorry. I have been busy at work (which unfortunately doesn't include theme building), so I haven't been able to mess around with this just yet. But, I haven't forgotten about this, and will be back next week to see what I can come up with.

If you want to keep the OEM icons for apps, games, setup and downloads DO NOT specify a default folder in Theme Builder. If you don't specify a default the OEM stays intact.
